I thought I knew about the war in Sierra Leone, but this book showed me I had no idea about what really happened. It is stunning for the insights it provides into the life of a child soldier in that civil war; the brutality, the innocence lost and the occasional flashes of boyhood. A brilliant, troubling read

Easy to read but fortunately not too distressful in descriptions. Amazing life of a young man and his achievement to escape his past.

TVや雑誌を通し少年兵の存在を知っていた。全てが焼きつくされ地面に家のあった後だけが々と残る廃墟と化した村の映像もみた。でもそれは日本に住む私にとって、現実として受け入れるには遥か遠くの出来事であった。SIERRA LEONE の小さな村、MOGBWEMO に住むISHMAELにとっても戦火は自国で起こっている事であるにも拘わらず、遠い世界の出来事だった。あの日までは。ある日、村を焼かれた人々が戦火に追われ、自分の村を通過するのをISHAMAELは目にする。やがて事態は一変する。ISHMAEL自身の村も彼が他の村に行っている間に反政府兵士に焼き尽くされ家族とも生き別れになる。飢えと死の恐怖に苛まれながら、逃げ惑う日々。反政府軍の少年兵に怯えるISHMAELがやがて自身少年兵となっていく過程は生きる為の絶望的選択として迫ってくる。政治的なものは一切語られない。何の為に村を焼き尽くさなければならないのか？何の為に殺さなければならないのか？子供さえ少年兵として村人を無差別に殺していく。なぜなのか？無言の内に読者は自問することになる。普通の、ごく、普通の１３歳の少年ISHAMAELが淡々と語る自身の話にただ空しさと怒りを感じざる得ない。村が襲わるってどういうこと、少年兵ってなに？その現実を生々しく内側から直視する。是非読んで欲しい１冊である。 英文は読みやすいが内容は重い。
