Was forced to use this recently on a mouthy fish. One of those big mouthed MFers that thought he could get one in. A few bops later and that big mouth won't be taking any liberties again. Solid, for sure.

What a lovely little item. It's got a good heft to it and looks a bit like something the Scotland Yard would have loved to have had. The crook handle and lanyard combo suits it fantastically in that you can easily make this look like a nice little umbrella by wrapping it in a thin sheet of canvas. A fine way to match up your love of fashion crafting and discreet self-defense, if you share those same hobbies. Then tuck the "umbrella" under your arm as you go about for a stroll, as you would, and feel good about your new dual-purpose fashion accessory. You feel safer and more fashionable and nobody else has to feel disconcerted wondering why the nice old smiling chap in a Cardigan and flat cap is walking down the boulevard with a club of all things. Win/Win.

A bit oversized for normal use but dismisses the largest of fish very quickly.

This is VERY well designed. The photos don't do it justice frankly. You may think the size or weight is a bit light based on the photos, but you would be mistaken. In fact I can't find anything wrong with this product. It has good balance, good weight, a nice finish, no sharp edges, and a very unique and useful design. The grip feels great and the hook at the end of the handle is ideally placed to keep the product in the hand while in use. It does not take much strength to make a mighty whop with the business end. And the very sturdy lanyard will stay on the wrist . Anyone who doesn't enjoy this fishbat is darned hard to please.

I tried to convince my wife that a youth size 20g shotgun (she's 5'3" and 110lbs) is what she really needed for a home invasion scenario, but she wasn't too excited about that idea. Over-penetration is a huge concern with the layout of our house and kids in the house, and even though birdshot in a 20g would be devastating to an attacker at 10-15ft with little risk of over-penetration, she still wasn't comfortable with the idea (even though I know she would happily use it in a life or death scenario). At any rate, she wasn't comfortable with a gun, so I had to look for some alternatives.Enter the Aftco Fish Bat...aka 'The Skull Crusher'! I got this for her to keep next to the bed, but as others have stated, it's quite heavy and I don't think she could swing this with much force with one hand if needed. She was able to with two hands, but in a home invasion scenario, she needs to be able to swing with one hand. I can easily swing this with a ton of force with one hand, but I'm also a very large guy.I'm giving this thing 5 stars because it's a beast and would be absolutely devastating to anyone on the receiving end. I keep it on my side of the bed...might come in handy someday. It weighs 25.5 ounces and is well balanced, though the 'hitting' end feels slightly heavier than the handle end. I don't know what it's made of, but I don't see how it could ever break...looks and feels VERY solid.I ended up getting my wife a Hurricane Aluminum Fish Bat, which is light as a feather and also seems quite strong. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that one either. It doesn't wield the stopping power of the Aftco, but being light and strong, it's better balanced for her needs. The Hurricane performed well this weekend when the kids beat the daylights out of a couple pinatas.;-)My wife feels a little more safe with her Hurricane and I feel a lot more tough with the Aftco. These short bats can be very useful in certain situations, even when you have a gun in the house. If you have a gun pointed at someone, you have to be willing to pull the trigger, and in some situations that's exactly what you should do if you need to, but there are also situations where you need something non lethal. Why not have both options available? Anyway, hopefully this review will help you make an informed decision.
