My wife found herself in a pinch. She had recently started working from home, and was given a company computer from which she had to do her professional work. Problem was, she has a personal computer of her own, and didn't have room at her desk for two complete computer systems and twin monitors. This switch solved that problem handily. For those unfamiliar with KVM switches, here's what the switch does: it takes a single keyboard/mouse and a single monitor, and allows two different computers to share them. Each computer connects into the back of the switch by way of one HDMI (for the monitor) and one USB 2.0 (for communicating with the keyboard and mouse). Your monitor also connects at the back of the switch via HDMI. When you want to switch from one computer to the other, all that you need to do is hit a button... and as the name of the device suggests, it switches. Easy-peasey.I had ordered the unit which offers 4 USB ports at the front, which would allow such things as thumb drives and USB headphones to be sharable between computers. This works without a hitch. My wife, who is partial to her own wireless keyboard/mouse, wanted to plug her dongle into the switch, and doing so worked seamlessly. While she has two systems below her desk, the surface of her desk has all the space she's always had: one monitor, one keyboard, and one mouse. The unit powers itself through the USB connections from either computer system, so there's no new cord to plug in (considering you're already rocking two computer systems, power strip space comes at a premium). There's also an extension to the switchover button, so if you'd like to hide the switch box entirely, you can rig the remote so that it sticks underneath your desk like a panic button. We just use the button on top of the unit, since the box itself is only a bit larger than a pack of cigarettes. In a device which is designed to save space, it makes sense that it doesn't occupy a lot of space on its own. It's a device which only does one thing, but does it well. Once it's set up, you won't have to worry about it. And it's reasonably priced!

I was reluctant to buy any of the amazon HDMI KVM switches as they are full of reviews about questionable longevity as well as reports of early failure.Mine arrived quickly and does exactly what I want it to (switches keyboard/mouse + HDMI between computers). It's compact and feels solid. However, the reports of failure on the internet are in the 1-3 month range. I will provide an update in the next 3-6 months about whether it is still working. My old IOgear VGA KVM switch has lasted 17 years without any problems. I'm hoping this one will last as long.Update April 29, 2022- the switch did have a few keyboard "disconnect" events but still seems to be working. looking a the pcb board; you can see that the legs of the the ports have not been soldered down (cost saving?). As such, frequent connection/disconnection will put pressure on the data pins that are soldered as they are the only thing keeping the ports in place.- I still like the switch but might "mod" it by actually flowing some solder into those leg joints so they provide additional support for the system. I think this is why it fails in time as the repetitive insertion of cables may cause microbreaks in the solder of the data linesMay 26, 2022 updateThe switch is still working well (fingers crossed). I have found that the included usb cables are pretty low quality and casual wiggling/bumping them can cause a disconnect/reconnect sound. Thus, I'm wondering if complaints from users about constant disconnect/reconnect is from loose/bad cables.THe good news is that these are standard USB a/b (printer type) cables so I have some high quality ones around and I will simply swap them in.
