One of the HVAC evaporator/air handlers in our attic had a typical spring-type overflow switch with a Styrofoam float on the arm. The float switch was cheap; the float had dried up and was broken off, making the switch useless. I saw this product and decided to give it a try as a replacement. What I Liked:- The switch was easy to install as a replacement. The contacts were NC (normally closed) with its float in the down position, just like the switch I was replacing. It had lots of connecting wire – maybe 5 or 6 feet.- The bracket appears to be stainless steel so it shouldn’t rust or corrode. The mounting bracket metal is formed to be slipped over the edge of the pan with a friction fit. Unfortunately, my overflow pan had a thick rim around the edge. The bracket could not be slid over it like the picture shows. I was able to mount the bracket inside the roll of the lip of my pan, drill a small hole and use a stainless bolt with a nylon hex nut to insure it wouldn’t vibrate loose.- Setting the float height is very easy. The float shaft is threaded and there are two nylon nuts which support the shaft on the bracket. Just loosen the nuts and adjust the height of the shaft/float to where you want. I set mine so that if I get 1/2” of water in the pan, the reed switch will open, shutting off the HVAC until the problem is resolved (water removed and problem fixed). Note: I also have a secondary electronic water sensor (the white circular unit in the picture) which sends a message to my cellphone if the probes beneath it see water. I’ve had pans overflow twice in my younger days resulting in ruined ceilings. I’m not taking any more chances!Observation: I did notice (on my unit), very little movement of the float is required to open the reed switch. The instructions state the sensitivity is such that a ¼” rise of the float opens the switch. My switch requires less than half that amount of movement to open the switch.Summary: Seems to be a well-built reed switch. It is potted and therefore waterproof. Hopefully it should last at least as long as my current HVAC system. I would have liked to see the slip-over bracket made adjustable or slightly wider to accommodate the lip of my overflow pan. I’m adjusting my rating down to 4-stars due to not accommodating that adjustment in the design, but it was easy to work around. Overall, good value. Thanks for reading my review.
