I'm not sure what to make of this meter. It's made for use in foods, and has a special tip that lets you plunge it into foods unlike my regular liquid pH meters. But it takes a while to settle on a reading. The unit comes with powder to mix calibration solution, but I'm not convinced that the amount of powder is precisely measured enough for 3 significant figure calibration solution, especially since you need to measure the water accurately as well, and beakers and many graduated cylinders are surprisingly inaccurate - a scale may be a better way to measure at home. So, I'm finding the unit to be a bit finicky and won't be using it for any liquids I can use a regular pH meter for.

I like the fact that I’m not pulling little strips of litmus paper out and comparing to a chart to see where it matches. I mean, I’m not colorblind so it’s not an issue but someone who was? What do they do? Well, I bet this would solve that problem right then and there. But either way, it’s nice getting a good clear reading and not having to guess…is it between red and redder? Or is it yellowish green? Like you do with litmus. It seems to fairly accurate, certainly good enough for its advertised purposes. But what about home/hobby chemistry? So far, so good. I mean, I would suggest putting this in some fuming nitric acid or the like but I think it would be fine for anything that doesn’t dissolve plastic (it doesn’t like acetone… dont ask how I know). So yeah, neat little gadget. It included several packets of powder, each to be mixed with an exact amount of distilled water (important that it is distilled) to creat a calibrating solution of acid, base, and neutral solutions. You get 4 packets of each I think, which is enough to make a LOT of solution.

I ordered this to use in cooking, so the temperatures are not closely controlled in my needs.I tested it with my most acidic liquid, a concentrated citric acid solution I use for mixed drinks (just a few drops). It was super low, around 0.3. That's as expected since it can damage tile and other surfaces if I spill it and don't clean up well.I diluted it, and watched the number grow until it was close to plain water. Our water is slightly base, and it reflected that result.

This is a handy pH meter if you need to check the pH in food preparation. Since I had nothing to compare the results to, I first did the calibration according to the instructions. It comes with packets for pH 4.0, 6.86, and 9.18 at 25 degrees C. Dissolve one into 250ml of water (supposed to be deionized water, but I just used filtered water). After inserting the probe into the water, press the TEMP/CAL button for 3s and it will calibrate for the given pH. Do this for each one. Then you can start testing liquids for pH and temperature (also selectable between Celsius and farenheit). The device also has a hold button to lock the display reading. I checked the pH of our tap water and it was slightly acidic, but I don't have another method of verifying the readings. Overall, it is easy to use.
