This is definitely a one-time use if you plan on putting this stuff on the cake itself; overall it's a 'fair' quality but I would not purchase again.-The ship: has a huge glob of glue right in the center, and it looks like something you'd put in an aquarium for tiny fish to hide in. I would not put this on a cake, there's a huge hole on the bottom that I would not want icing to go into.-The compasses: these are cool, the dials actually turn. They're super lightweight though, and the hinges are just cheap plastic - they won't take much opening and closing without tearing apart.-Treasure Chest - it opens and closes okay but like the ship, I wouldn't put this on a cake. The bottom has gaps where it connects to the sides where icing will get into and would be crazy difficult to clean.Everything else is okay. The gems, two tiny figurines, spyglass, and the Happy B-Day banner- those could all go on a cake with no problem. The spyglass expenses and you can actually look through it though it's too blurry to actually see anything. The coins will snap if you bend them. I wouldn't put them directly on a cake but maybe in the treasure chest with or without the gems.

This set is perfect for the pirate in your life, big or small.I am an amateur cake decorator--I only do it for friends and family. And I've learned over time that it's much easier to make a colorful but basic cake and then add decorations to it, rather than using a molded shape pan and trying to make all the different colored frosting and trying to pipe an elaborate design. So when my little pirate had a birthday, I made a blue cake, swirled some waves into it to make it look somewhat like the sea, and decorated it with these fun accessories. It was perfect!The set itself is very cute. You get a big boat and a small boat, a little pirate captain, a compass that opens and closes and the dial turns, a plastic eye patch (because a cloth one would be a little weird on a cake), 10 gold coins, a telescope that extends and retracts, a Happy Birthday cake topper with pirate designs, and a treasure chest filled with gems. It really fills up a cake. And the birthday pirate will even have some toys to play with once the cake is gone.Unfortunately my little treasure chest arrived broken. It's missing a hinge on the back, so it has to stay closed. I was hoping to have it sitting open with the gems spilling out of it down the side of the cake, so that was a bit of a bummer. And my big ship had a blob of glue right on top of it. I was scared to remove it, because the ship itself is made out of string and wood and resin. It's a pretty cool ship. And I was afraid that I'd mess it up if I tried to get rid of the glue. So I just left it and hoped no one would notice it.Other than that, this set is really cool. It's perfect for a pirate-themed cake.
