The 8Bitdo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Bluetooth Controller delivers outstanding performance for Android users at a very attractive price. Featuring Hall effect joysticks and triggers, the controller offers precise, drift-free input with a smooth analog feel. The inclusion of back buttons, custom mapping, and a turbo function adds a layer of flexibility and pro-style features rarely seen in this price range.Ergonomics are solid—the controller feels great in hand with a responsive button layout and satisfying build quality. Bluetooth pairing with Android devices is fast and stable, making it a top-tier option for mobile gaming, cloud services, or emulation. However, iOS compatibility is a major drawback. The controller doesn’t connect reliably to Apple devices, limiting its utility for cross-platform users. For Android gamers, it’s a no-brainer. Just be aware: if you're in the Apple ecosystem, this controller likely won't meet your needs without future firmware support or workaround.

This controller charges through USB Type C, even on USB Type C chargers, flashing its white LED whilst charging and turning it off when fully charged. It comes with a very well-written user manual (EN/ZH/JP/KO/DE/FR/IT/ES) and the 8BitDo Ultimate app is completely optional. (Somehow the manual mentions a green LED for charging.)I have smaller hands and the ergonomics are good for me. I don’t know how they will be for people with bigger hands, but the controller comes with 2 analogue stick caps you can add for some decoration and more height if you have bigger fingers. (The caps don’t replace what’s already on the analogue sticks, which is not removeable.)I noticed that the face button layout (XY on top, AB on bottom) was not quite Nintendo-style (YX on top, BA on bottom), which I am more used to. In the user manual, there’s a blurb on button swapping, for which you can just press both buttons at once (which sends them to the device), then press the star button. For this function I would rather press the star button first to start a button swap mode, then the two buttons, since I don’t mean to send both of the buttons; indeed, I don’t mean to send either of them at all to start swapping them. But let’s say I swap the A and B buttons (hold A and B, press star, release). The swap function seems to survive only for about 3 to 6 minutes at a time, so whenever it stops, I will send the B button, because I’m pressing the face button labelled B expecting to send A when the function drops, which makes it send B instead. So this controller, despite its XYAB face button labels, seems to function better as a PlayStation controller by default, where Cross (Select) is at the bottom, matching the A label, and Circle (Cancel) is on the right, matching the B label, and you don’t need swaps.Turbo is better, since you mean to send the button whenever you want to turbo it. You just hold the button then press the star button once to set it to turbo when pressed, or star twice to set it to turbo when not pressed. That works well. The Hall effect joysticks and secondary shoulder triggers are really good, and should last a long time without drifting. Latency is also good; I can manage to do the Yoshi double-eat berry glitch in Super Mario World with it, which is a very tightly timed action. The joystick is also very responsive in RPGs like Stardew Valley. Face buttons are nice to press, neither overly mushy nor clicky; all other buttons including those you get when pressing the analogue sticks are clicky microswitches. After downloading the 8BitDo Ultimate app (v. 1.3.9) from the Google Play Store, I tried to run it with the controller connected, and it would endlessly sit on the “connecting to the controller” screen. I left it there for 10 minutes in case it was downloading and applying a firmware upgrade to the controller as it was showing the connection screen, but that was all it ever showed. This happened on all 3 Android devices I used it on: a Motorola moto g8 power on Android 11, a Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 on Android 9 and a Samsung Galaxy S21 on Android 14. I can confidently say that the application v. 1.3.9 doesn’t work for this controller.Case compatibility is not great, and accessory compatibility (PopSockets, etc.) is nil. You would have to completely remove accessories to use this; if they adhere to your case, you should probably remove your case rather than the accessory. The grips on the sides of the inside are good to catch smartphones, but if you tend to throw things in rage whilst you game, use the controller on its own with your smartphone on a kickstand or so. Depending on the phone, the speaker may get blocked and muffled.
