There are many exciting features included in this meter. It looks to be well coveted already so I’ll just briefly mention my favorites. One, its ability to detect minute changes in the magnetic field near the probe. It can tell polarity as well as its strength, which is nicely plotted on a running scale. I have no way to confirm its precision but I give no reason to doubt its tolerance that’s listed. Two, and oddly enough, it can be used as a device to measure rotation. It counts the number of times the magnetic field changes and can give you a reliable speed or RPM of the device under measure. It comes in a standard carrying case and happily, is rechargeable. You would thing just about anything electronic these days would be but some are not. Fortunately, this is.Anyway, I’m sure there are industrial uses for this but where I see it bringing the most joy would be to that upcoming science major, who can’t get enough physics and electricity in their lives. I would have loved something like this when I was a young nerd instead of an old nerd.

This is a useful tool when experimenting with permanent magnet generator designs or even basic testing of neodymium magnet strength claims from online sellers. With so many misrepresented neodymium magnets being sold online, it's nice to have a tool to see if the stated magnetic strength is even in the advertised ballpark. The tool is easy to use, comes with a nice storage case and charging cable (no USB adapter is included), and works as claimed. The hall effect sensor in mounted on a thin (non-flexible) strip of PCB with dimensions silk-screened on it. This gives an immediate reading of how deep from the edge the sensor is.The combination of PCB and sensor is 1.75mm thick, 5.0mm wide, so the spacing between rotor and stator (for example) must be wider than 1.75mm for the sensor to slip in.The sensor cable is fairly flexible at room temperature. The flip-out stand is the only thing I'm not liking with this unit. It's rounded on the bottom just like the rest of the unit and is very unstable. I found the meter keeps tipping over with the slightest tug on the cable. Would definitely consider redesigning the stand. Otherwise very slick little tool. There are 4 small Phillips screws holding the unit together, suggesting that replacement of the internal battery will be possible in the future.

In a word, thing Gauss Meter is "Sweet". It's one of those devices that you never knew you needed until you've used one. It's going to be a learning curve to learn to how to use it, but I've already found two functions that will be very useful to my projects. Those are the North/South indicator and the speed meter.I make a lot of projects that require the use of magnets, electromagnets or a combination of both. Knowing which pole is North beforehand makes it easier to configure my projects. Especially with electromagnets. In the past I did this by having a magnet with "N" marked on it and used it to find the polarity of the other magnet.Recently I did a project where I needed to use a magnetic field to uncouple the rolling stock in the clubs model train layout and it was a lot of trial and error to get that magnetic field just right. If I had this meter back then, I would have been able to fine-tune it much easier. The model that I have is the 5% precision. At this time, I can't say if I will need more precision. But as I get better at using it, I will decide then if the extra money for the 1% precision model is worth it. I got this unit through the Amazon Vine program so I pain nothing for it. However, considering that I used trial-and-error in the past, I'm sure 5% will be adequate. All things considered, this is a great addition to my collection of meters. I'm looking forward to using it regularly.
