I took the risk of buying this Router second hand or "pre loved" as they say. Big mistake. It was delivered on time, but it was clearly a refurbished model. It came with no Manuel and no set up disk. I had to get Asus tech support to help and they couldn't do anything and they told me never to buy refurbished IT products as they are s total waste of time and rarely work. So, I'm sending it back for a refund. I have since bought a brand new one - same make and model and will review that later....

It is very powerful WiFi route for its price. Main "pro":1. It is Dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5Ghz). Having the 5GHz is nice since I find out that I have too many neighbors' routers around at 2.4GHz but in the 5GHz band there is no single one, so new devices such smartphones may operate more reliable.2. Wireless signal is powerful enough. The router sits in the basement but at the 2nd floor reception is still good (uo to maximum speed of the modem).3. It is based on DD-WRT and has numerous features such as OpenVPN server to access the home network remotely.4. IPv6 support (but my ISP is still IPv4 only).5. All expected settings for the WiFi router: guest access, port forwarding, QoS, advanced routing, DMZ, etc, etc.6. "Asuswrt-Merlin" makes it even better!7. Stable and quick.8. Cool design.Mixed:1. Initial setup was quick, though not ideal: the router was not able to connect to Internet at the first attempt and suggested to reboot the cable modem. After that it proceeded successfully, though it forgot that it prompted to change the password and I had to figure out that I still have to use the default password after the router reboot.2. Does not have wall mount but holes for the stand may be used for this purpose.Cons:Actually nothing. Some thoughts: today it is hard to find a good inexpensive wired router, so WiFi routers are still good choice for that purpose.

Outstanding product. I now own 3 of these - 1 for each house, and every single one of them is as amazing as the other. You never need to reboot them - if something has an issue, and they are asking you to reboot your router - with the Asus N66U, 99% of the time, the problem is not with the router. It has amazing features, I use these few, and they all work flawlessly:- Dual WAN failover (onto USB 3G/4G or backup ethernet line)- File Server- Print Server- Multiple wifi SSIDs with private networks and guest timeouts- VPN server- VPN client (to connect the whole house to another VPN network)- Traffic shapingIf you need a rock solid, bullet proof router, this is the product you should choose.

It seems like every year or less I am replacing my two routers at home. I used to buy Netgear routers only to have them fail and have to be replaced and ditto for Cisco/Linksys home routers. I have really hated to spend over $60 for a router and perhaps that is why I have gotten nothing but junk out of the name brands just mentioned? Enter the ASUS RT-N66W and ASUS RT-N66U.When my two good for nothing pieces of junk routers (Cisco/Linksys E series) began failing, I decided never to go back to that brand again. I am just really tired of having to deal with poor products. I took a seriously hard look at other "off brands" and just wasn't satisfied. As an avid home computer "tinkerer" I have exclusively used ASUS main boards for my gaming computers for around 20 years now. Typically, ASUS products have done very well for me. I have had the occasional lemon, but more often than not, ASUS main boards have lasted me over five years without breaking. I replace them only to get the "latest and greatest." So, I decided to spend the extra money on their routers.I purchased both the ASUS RT-N66W and ASUS RT-N66U when they were on sale. The price tag was steep for me because I am used to spending under $60 per router, but at the rate of replacement (about twice a year) I was spending $240 per year to replace two routers every six months... no joke!I haven't owned the ASUS RT-N66W and ASUS RT-N66U more than a couple weeks, but I already love them! They are doing exactly what they are supposed to do without any problems. The construction on these routers feel like top quality. They are heavier than the crap-o Cisco/Linksys home products I am used to. I don't know that the better quality "feel" means the ASUS routers are going to be a better router in the long term, but I already like them because of their quality. All the hard ware connectors, lights, chassis, and antennas look and feel durable. I hope that turns out to be true! The internal workings of both the ASUS RT-N66W and ASUS RT-N66U are pretty good. I like the interface software. It is simple and intuitive. I don't have to fuss about with the settings unless I want to. If I want to "geek out" and play with the settings, the router software is advanced enough for me to do so. However, I don't like to fuss with settings all that much, and both routers where essentially just plug and play. I set the ASUS RT-N66W to be my gateway router and set up the RT-N66U to be a wireless AP. It only took five minutes to have them set up and they worked. What I have really appreciated about these routers is that while they do everything any other home router should do, these routers have really good signal strength in my three story home. I can even connect 60 ft. away from my home with good signal strength. When I plugged these routers in, once they found the internet they automatically checked for firmware updates and updated. You will want to make sure to update your firmware. I think part of the reason I am not seeing problems is that the latest firmware fixed bugs some have reported about here on Amazon. Get those updates! Both the ASUS RT-N66W and ASUS RT-N66U aren't rebooting every other hour (like some of the junk I have had in the past). The gigabit speeds really do work. They really do route IPv6 (a bonus!), they do setup DHCP nicely. I can connect USB drives and they detect them and use them albeit a little slower than I like. The DLNA and iTunes servers actually work! And... you get free DDNS from ASUS, which again, it works as advertised!Perhaps these routers will turn out to be pieces of junk, too. I will find out in six months if I have to replace them and if that happens I will downgrade my rating. Until then, I am feeling really happy that I have two routers that are problem free at the moment and if they are half as good as ASUS main boards, then I won't have to spend another dime on a router until it is time for an upgrade!

OK got this with the same crap firmware like everyone else..No problem I work in IT and managed to fix it. I come from RT-N56U. I have many IP cameras inside my house google tv etc etc. My first initial issue is that with the same wifi settings I had for my rt-n56u all my wifi devices either drop connection and were not initially able to re-join the same wifi network although with the same settings..I had to reset many of them and even after that sometimes they work sometimes they don't.. Secondly some IP cameras work some don't, not sure why as they are the same type model. Last but not least, DDNS is BROKEN, 100%, it's not functioning properly, meaning it's not redirecting the wan request to my local IP camera for a specific port. The big dilemma is keep the RT-N56U (can return it up until Jan 31) or keep this one until the a$$ from asus release a working fw. Even better keep my old dir-655 return both asus and re-buy this thing when the fw is working.Update 1/20/12: After messing up for hours with wifi settings it seems I can now see all my wifi devices with WPA2 AES (teh best method anyways)...Will report back on how stable is all. There is one thing that bugs me, that no one is talking about...If I connect my 1T hdd to one of the router's USB I can see the HDD from my google tv but there are no folders listed?! WHY??I thought it is DLNA capable.Update 1/21/12: Wifi stability is poor, devices connect and drop randomly. I feel the port forwarding does not work quite right. I have a domain name cfg with dyndns and being using it for years. I put this domain under the router as well (my IP cameras have this configured also). I have ipcam viewer on my iphone and all these cameras have the same hostname (see dyndns) and a diff port. Sometimes I can connect to some IP cameras but not as fast as before with RT-N56U, which I already returned. If I connect my iphone to wifi I can't see the cameras, like the dyndns domain (cgf in the iphone sw) cannot be resolved to the static local IP. Bottom line the same settings same devices worked flawlessly with RT-N56U and DIR-655 but NOT with this router...Basically if I put wan ip (or domain name):port number in a browser I can't access the camera, however if I out local IP: port number I can, BAD this used to work just fine. Will be keeping it for another 2-3 weeks hopefully a new fw will resolve all these issues or something else... With all these being said this goes back to one star.Update: 1/24/12: Called Asus to complain about the broken port fwd functionality was told a tech will call me back. No one called. Asus support is PATHETIC.Update: 2/4/12: Finally managed to get a good contact from Asus. He told me that NAT loopback and DLNA issues should get fixed with the next fw...For now I put it back to 2stars.Update: 2/13/12: Asus fixed most of the issues with 3.0.0.3.96...I will test more DLNA but for now all I want works fine.Update: 2/13/12 pm time: Not sure what happened here as I write this message twice now due to no Internet connection...I get now freq Internet disconnects here is what i did:-updated my fw-changed disable hw back to no-changed DLNA server name to RT-N66U from USB-connected 1T hdd-changed power settings to 200mW from 40mWI now get a bunch of disconnects so I wanted to put the power settings back to 40mW but guess what ? They were @ 40mW like I never changed them.aSUS fixed 3 bugs and introduced major new ones...During all the issues I have had for the past 1h I got these:-router lost my cfg-router came on with wizard like a brand new routerDue to all the above I downgraded mine back to 3.1.0.3.90Stability = ZERO at this point...I do not recommend upgrading the router at this point!!!aSUS needs to go back and re-write this as it makes the router VERY unstable! Goes back to 1 STAR for releasing a even worse fw w/o testing it.Update: 2/25/12: With fw 102 Asus seemed to have fixed all major issues...There are still things that need to work better but the router is stable and fast. Wifi is good, DLNA works, NAT loopback is fixed to name just few of them. Thus it goes back to 4 stars for now.Update: 3/28/12: After running 108 fw for a few weeks now, all works good. This is a 5 star product.Update: 7/7/12: Currently running 155 beta fw and it's rock solid.Update: 9/14/12: Currently running 3.0.0.4.220 fw (icloud enabled and 64k nvram) and it's rock solid (still).
