A good book with 2 mayor problems.1: Way to big emphasis on cursive writing. Cursive writing is quite hard and something of the past in most modern countries, cursive Ukranian will be very hard and time consuming for someone who does not know Ukrainian or cursive writing in their own or another language. This book starts with cursive language in the very beginning and even if you skip it, you will not understand many future lessons in the book. I believe that this is a mistake and should be removed or at least be optional to progress. The author argues that knowing cursive Ukrainian is important because all written Ukranian will be in cursive. I've worked as a medic in Ukraine for 5 months and I have still not seen cursive! All text I've seen (on signs, products and documents) have been in Ukrainian Cyrillic. I don't want to waste time learning cursive, I want to learn how to read and write in normal Cyrillic and how to be able to speak and understand Ukrainian.2: The website which is a big part of this book, and needed for about half the lessons I have done, is blocked in the country where I am (which is ironically Ukraine!). There should be a disclaimer saying that this book only works in the US (and which ever other countries?).Besides this two things, I enjoyed the book and think it's well layed out with lots of quick lessons that do not get to dull.But please, make a book without cursive and that is independent form that website.

I used Yuri Shevchuk's Beginner's Ukrainian workbook for both elementary and intermediate-level Ukrainian classes, and I can confidently say it’s an outstanding resource. There is simply no other workbook like it on the market. For English speakers looking to learn Ukrainian, this book is an absolute must-have. The chapters include helpful dialogue practice as well as practice problems, which help solidify new grammatical cases. The accompanying website has great recorded videos so that you can learn to pronounce things correctly. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn Ukrainian!

Es un libro muy interesante para aprender ucraniano. Explica todo en los laterales y los ejercicios van complementados con los audios. El diccionario de dos vías junto con inglés está muy bien. Hay apartados para resumir la gramática.Por poner una pega, la cursiva. No sé si es que la fuente de la cursiva es habitual en Ucrania; si es así entonces está bien el sobreesfuerzo de hacer los ejercicios en cursiva; si no es así entonces debería cambiarse esa fuente, es horrible. (Modificación: la cursiva es importante en Ucrania y se aprende en la escuela desde niños, por lo que es perfecto!)

It is true that the audio quality could be better, as mentioned in another review.However: this book has many drills (repetitive language exercises) that are really helpful when you're trying to use the various grammar structures of Ukrainian fluently and confidently. For this alone the book is worth its money for me. In theory, at a certain level, you'll be able to create such drills on your own, but it is way easier to use a book like this to get your daily dose of practice.Grammar explanations are good. The included beginner's dictionary in the back is more than a word list but done in the same style and depth as the author's other work, the Ukrainian-English Collocation Dictionary.Highly recommended if you're learning Ukrainian independently and need more material.

A little too soon to tell just yet. But I am enjoying it. My dad was Ukrainian so I like to do learn the language.
