Full Range, Class A/B Topology

A class A/B amplifier uses two groups of transistors and it is generally considered to be the best compromise of the two classes put together. Class ‘A’ and class ‘B’. A pure class ‘A’ amplifier typically has an enormous amount of current flowing through its output transistors with no audio signal. A pure class ‘B’ amplifier has NO current flowing through its outputs with no audio signal. This eliminates virtually all of the crossover distortion that’s possible with class ‘B’ amplifiers. A class A/B amplifier is much more efficient than a class ‘A’ but without the possible distortion of a class ‘B’. As if that wasn’t enough, with a Full Range amplifier you not only have the option to run your speakers, but also your subwoofers. By just a flip of a switch from Full to Low, the PV3700 will change from offering a complete range of frequencies that you need to be able to listen to your 2/3/4 or 5 way speakers to the “Low” that you need for a subwoofer application.

MOSFET PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) Power Supply

Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor is a transistor used for amplifying or switching electronic signals.

We use it in billions of them. In our computers, our telephones, game consoles, cars, electrical appliances and in this case, our Amplifiers. They are found in systems where information is processed or stored.

A MOSFET is basically an electrical switch that allows the flow of electrical current.

An electrical switch has two possible states, ON or OFF. This is where the MOSFET performs its most important role in our D Class amplifiers by allowing or preventing the flow of power and creating an efficient amplifier.

The 'Pulse Width Modulated' is a design that is significantly simplifies power supplies.

It controls the output voltage and current precisely by not only removing the output current sensing loss, but also eliminating all secondary feedback circuitry.

The PWM can increase efficiency, is lighter, smaller, can reduce total cost, productivity and system reliability.

5/4/3/2 Channel

This feature comes in handy for a few different installation applications and is very multi versatile. Let’s go down the list.

The “5” channel will always be a subwoofer channel.

The “4” channel means that you are able to simply use the PV3700 as a 4 channel amplifier by hooking up 4 speakers to it. Fronts and rears.

The “3” channel is slightly different.

What you can do here is to hook up 2 speakers to channels 1+2 and use the remaining 3+4 channels for 1 subwoofer in bridged mode.

And lastly, the functionality of the “2” channel.

Channels 1+2 can be bridged to accommodate one speaker OR one subwoofer.

Channels 3+4 can be used in the exact same above application.

Variable Gain Control

Properly setting the gain on your amplifier is key to getting great sound in your car.

The gain control is not for adjusting volume. It simply adjusts the amount of signal that is coming from your receiver and going to your amplifier.

If you set it too high, you are introducing distortion into the sound. But if you set it too low, then you are choking back on what the amplifier is there to do in the first place.

Here is a technique that works on most amplifiers.

First, turn the amplifier’s gain all the way down. Then go up front and put on some music. Now crank the stereos volume until you hear distortion. Then back it off until the distortion goes away.

Go to your amplifier and turn the gain up until the distortion comes back. Then once again, back off until the distortion goes way.

And you are done!

Low And High Level Inputs

There are two different ways that you can get a signal into the PV3700 from your receiver.

One is called Low level input and the other is called High level input.

A low level input is measured in voltages. It comes in the form of RCA outputs from the back of your receiver and goes to the RCA inputs on your amplifier.

A high level input is measure in wattages. It comes in the form one positive and one negative wire from the back of your receiver to and goes to the input terminal of your amplifier in the same wire form.

Low-level (RCA) input wiring is preferred for best audio performance. Always use a high-quality RCA cable for best audio performance.

Note: Do not connect both the high level and low level inputs from your receiver to your amplifier at the same time!

Tri-Mode Operation

Using tri-mode on a capable amplifier is a way to maximize the potential of a two-channel car amplifier. With the ability to drive a pair of speakers and a subwoofer, tri-mode is an affordable way to get a powerful two-channel car stereo. The advantages of using a single amplifier include lower amperage requirements from the vehicle's charging system and less physical space needed for an amplifier installation. Regardless of the reasons, setting an amplifier to tri-mode is a viable mobile audio installation solution.

Bridgeable

Auto amplifiers increase power from the stereo to the speakers. Each channel of an amplifier is designed to power one speaker. Some amplifiers, called mono amps, have only one channel. Audiophiles (A person enthusiastic about high-fidelity sound reproduction) often use a mono amp to drive a single subwoofer, but there is a way to connect two amplifier channels to a single subwoofer. This is called bridging the amp, and it dramatically increases the power output to the subwoofer.

Variable Low-Pass Crossover

Subwoofers reproduce sound based on a number of different low-range frequencies. This process is called the crossover effect and occurs because the vast majority of audio systems cannot cover the entire spectrum sufficiently to minimize sound distortion and maintain an appropriate frequency ratio.

In the case of our PV3700 amplifier, a variable crossover is offered so that you, the listener, can have the ability to set the frequency at which the crossover occurs, thereby setting specific sound specifications for the bass frequency reproduction.

Variable High-Pass Crossover

Speakers reproduce sound based on high, low or mid-range frequencies. What the Variable High-Pass Crossover does is that it gears specifically towards 'highs' such as all size speakers including mid ranges and tweeters. Use this crossover to control exactly how you want those high frequencies to come through for a crisp and clear auditory experience.

Variable Bass Boost

So you have Bass Boost and Variable Bass Boost.

The difference between the two is that with Bass Boost you either have extra bass or you don’t. But with Variable Bass Boost you have the control of exactly how much BASS you want to pump out to your subwoofer(s).

Power Input Terminals

When installing all Boss Audio Systems amplifiers, it is important to use the 'Maximum' gauge of wire that the power terminals will accommodate. For instance, if an amplifier has 4 gauge power and ground terminals, use high quality 4 gauge multi-strand copper wire to make your power connections. This maximizes the amplifier’s ability to draw the required power upon demand. This also helps prevent overheating that could cause failure. Always make sure your vehicle’s electrical system is capable of handling the current demands from any after-market accessory.

Please refer to the amplifier’s owner’s manual for correct wire gauge sizes.

Fuses

Fuses protect both the amplifier and the electrical system of your vehicle from faulty conditions.

If you must replace a fuse on the amplifier, always use a fuse of exactly the same type and rating of the one you are replacing. A different type of fuse or rating may result in damage or cause a fire. Please refer to your owner’s manual for reference on fuse size and type.

If you plan on using multiple amplifiers in your system, be certain that you have the appropriate sized gauge wire to accommodate the current demands for all amplifiers and that the wire is fused correctly at the battery. Connect an empty fuse holder within 18-inch (45 centimeters) of the car battery and run a 4 gauge (or heavier) cable from this fuse to the amplifier location. A fused distribution block is recommended when using several amplifiers or accessories.

Proper Grounding

Proper grounding is essential for any electric accessory in a vehicle.

Some key points to remember: Keep the ground as short as possible. Connect the amplifier’s power ground terminal to the closest point on the chassis of the car. Keep this ground wire to less than 39-inch (100 centimeters) in length. Use 4 gauge (or heavier) wire. Scrape any paint away, use a star washer to 'bite' into the metal and secure it tightly using a grounding lug.

Any steps that aren’t followed properly will result in a higher resistance at the ground point, causing unnecessary heat, high current draw, and potentially damaging the electrical accessories in the vehicle.

Installation

Please be advised that 'professional' installation of all of our products is recommended and encouraged. Installation by a professional installer increases the length of any applicable warranty on most Boss Audio Systems products. The warranty is void, however, on product that is damaged during installation by a non-professional installer. Professional installation should also ensure trouble-free usage for years to come.

It seems like they thought of every possible installation situation with this amp, in addition to including a 5th channel.for a subwoofer. There are high and low impedance connections and many other adjustments. As far as power output, I have not had any problems powering my 5 3/4" speakers and tweeters in the front or the 5 3/4" and 4x6" pairs on the back channel. It is also powering my Fosgate 12" thin mount sub very well .I am getting exactly the clarity and volume that I wanted to be able to listen with all 4 truck windows down at highway speed. The lights are nice as well, but they will eventually be covered when I reinstall the rear bench seat.Seems like a well built frame and unit oveall.I don't really have any complaints assuming it lasts for a while.I definitely would NOT buy the copper coated aluminum boss wiring kit again though. Do yourself a favor and go with real copper wire. It's hard to belive that the Boss company that built this nice amp would agree to put their name on that embarrassing wire kit.

Purchased this amp to replace my old legacy 4 channel amp that had been running my 2x12" Pheonix Gold Octane subs for a long time. Installed it and decided to also have it replace the amps I was using to power my front and rear channels. So far it has amazing power and clear sound. Will update I about a month and see how it holds up. But so far amazing sound and power for the money

I bought the 3700 Boss 5 channel amp with a goal of a well balanced sound for all types of music. Not only did I hit this goal, but it's louder the I ever imagined. I have my Boss Amp hooked to two 6.5" 3 way 300 watt boss door speakers With tweeters in the front, two 6.5 two way speakers and tweeters in the back, and one 1100 watt 12" Pioneer Comp Sub in the cargo area in a 2004 Tahoe. I added a Capicitor mainly because I got it as a bonus. FYI, Before I had the capacitor installed I didn't have any issues with power. I am using 8 gauge power and ground wires, and 6 channel Stinger RCA cables. I did run into some engine noise at first, but then I found out you need to run RCA opposite side of power wire. Rookie mistake on my part. Once I changed my mistake by re running my RCA cable away from my power Line, all my interference noise stopped. when I read some of the bad reviews, I felt the problems people were having was due to improper installation. So far one month after my installation my intuition was correct, because I have yet to have any issues that wasn't corrected from me being a rookie. Matching your gains on all amplithfilers is very important for audio quality and Ampliphier performance. This is the main problem for all Ampliphiers not performing correctly and not lasting. There are Lots of helpful hints if you search How to tune your AMP on the internet. I'm guessing this could be some of the problems the lower reviewers guys could be having. This AMP gets plenty loud, and provides lots of power. When I run music at normal levels My AMP stays cool and runs fine. When you run it hard it does get warm but not to hot to touch and sound great. I installed this under my passenger seat in my 2004 Chevy Tahoe and it fits perfect. People with smaller cars pay attention to dimensions because this AMP is a monster. My friends were easily impressed by the sound and the cool look the way it lights up especially at night. I went expensive on an Apple Car play receiver and Boss really helped me out by giving me an affordable option to continue to add to my expensive receiver at a very affordable price. It's a no brainer if you're in the market for a dive loud system, just make sure it's installed correctly before writing a review. I made lots of mistakes but after researching my problems I got it performing like a Boss! The Phantom 3700 gives you plenty of options to achieve your goals and a great option for people with limited resources. Keep in mind when you're costing Ampliphiers out, the hardware such as wires cables conectors ect: can get very costly ontop of your equipment. I spent almost as much on hardware as I did on the Amp. Boss makes this less painful by giving you such a good deal from the start. I decided to spend less money on the Amp and more money on the correct wires and cables. Try it out, install it right and you'll Love it!
