Have to admit that I am kinda impressed with this unit. Every scan has been super-quick and comes out perfect. You can load in complete larger documents to create PDF files in no time. I actually did over 2000 scans in quick succession, and it has no missed a beat! Loving it

This is my first experience of any kind with a brother product and straight up, I do not like this product. I find the user experience to be nothing shy of a headache and incomplete. I have experience with 3 other portable scanners (all Epson) and they were between 25%-50% cheaper, are easier to use and Epson provides much better documentation and support.I will start with what I like. Build quality is excellent. On board display provides limited functionality but it is a convenient feature, though I find the PC interface to be better. The screen is a bit too small to be REALLY functional as it is often difficult to select a specific icon on the screen due to the limited real-estate. Scanning results are very good and fast. Wireless phone functionality is limited to 300dpi, where as PC based sources can go to 600dpi. My Epson do 1200dpi! This is not a deal breaker as most requirements are well suited to a resolution of 300dpi by at this price point, I am not big a fan of limitations like that. User interface software is half decent and very easy to install. Capable.if single.sided or double sided sheets or business card scans. That is as far as I can go with what there is to like. Now on to the aspects that make me think this product should be avoided.Configuration settings are "clunky" at best. Documentation is non existent or an utter train wreck. Brother offers a bunch of feature down loads but no explanations as to what they do. Not all appear to be overly intuitive. The wireless functions are more limited than those available with a USB connection, why? No power supply is provided. Though there is one available for purchase but at $399, that is a ridiculous ask. You can only run this device off a source host if the usb ports are capable of putting out 5V and 3A. The provided usb-c to usb-c cable is too short for practical use. Wi-Fi was a nightmare that made me want to melt this scanner into a form of abstract art - aggravating to say the least. The worse experience of all was the PIN setup. I gave up even trying after 2 hours and about a dozen resets. Set up requires the use of a default password that is found on the bottom of the scanner but guess what...? It doesn't work. It constantly comes back as "invalid / incorrect".Despite the user manual giving, what appears at first, a comprehensive setup map, it seems to be ommitting a ton and can we talk about the numerous spelling mistakes. It all feels poorly executed and rushed. Not worth $400. I also find that the 20 page feeder tray limitation is a but of a surprise at this price point. Feeding documents often produced aggravating paper jams. All my other scanners pull in the first page when loading the tray, stage and then scan, this product does nothing of the sort and required frequent "babysitting" to ensure that everything runs through. While a few offerings are available for additional software the one thatbstood out the most was "Kofax Power PDF". It offers a 7day free trial after which a full subscription is $169. Are these people kidding? Perhaps they are counting on deep corporate pockets. Ridiculous. To sum up, I would never recommend this scanner to anyone. I have used a ton of them and this one is so far behind the curve, that it amazes me, ESPECIALLY at this price point. Software and firmware updates could fix alot of what is wrong with this product but neither are a guarantee to be offered.Nope, this is a HARD pass for me.

I apologize for the extremely long review but I wanted to make it clear how difficult this device was to set up and how it seems Brother did not do a half-decent job of making information available nor put the right default password on the label.¯_(ツ)_/¯For a portable scanner, this is a decent size. It does come with a lot of features, but there are also things that are quirky and irritating. On the upside:► While this is sold as a wireless scanner, and it does work well in that mode, I prefer to use the USB connection. That said, in order to use it via USB I needed to buy a 5V 3Amp AC adapter and plug that into the back. My laptop does not support 3Amps via the USB connection.► The user manual walks through the whole process of setting up the device.► Included is a USB-C to USB-C cable. It's nice to have, but in reality, it should be at least two feet longer since it's not always an option to have the scanner sitting next to a laptop or PC.► Getting connected to WiFi was easy enough. It scans for local signals. I just needed to pick the right system and have the password ready.► Software installation was simple and fast; nothing technical about the installation.► Using the software is also easy.► Using the above mentioned software, getting connected via either USB or WiFi was fast and simple.► Scanning business cards is easy enough. On the top panel, there is a manual slider switch. When set to the left, it scans documents. When slid to the right, it uses the front-fed card scanner and does a double-sided card scan.► While the control panel is small, it does offer a decent amount of information and programmability. That said, because it is so small, it's difficult to hit the correct spot when entering information on the display keypad. I have to use a pen because my fingers are too wide to hit the correct button. It is small enough to take along if needed but it would be nice if there was a strap or sleeve included to keep the top from opening up while being packed into a bag.Using the Brother software to scan documents is simple. It is limited to 600 DPI whereas other not as expensive options do go to 1200 DPI. That said, when using the Print and Scan app it offers 1200 DPI resolution. Why does one piece of software state 600 and one 1200 DPI? See the images.♦ Getting the pages to the feeder can be tricky. I have to gently force them into the feeder optioning. There is no mechanism to pull them into the chamber.Using the phone app and WiFi direct on the scanner only allows for scanning at 300 DPI.♦ It took a lot of monkeying around to get connected. The user manual and online documentation weren't of much use. There just wasn't the information I needed to sort through the setup. It turns out I needed to run the app while on the display, hitting the "Push Button" button after tapping on the phone/WiFi button on the display.♦ After getting connected the first time, the button needs to be pressed every time I want to connect again. There is an option to use a PIN, but when I set this, I've never been asked to enter a PIN on the phone.♦ ♦ ♦ I have been playing with this on two phones just to make sure it's not a phone issue.🚩 More quirky stuff:♦ On the control panel, at the top right, when powered up, it scrolls a message saying to change the default admin password, but nowhere in the documentation or on the machine does it say what the default password is or where it can be found! In the downloaded user manual (PDF) it mentions the WiFi password for connecting via WiFi but nothing about an admin password.👀 In the Online Users Guide it states:"To change the password, press image [Settings]>[General Setup]>[Setting Lock]>[Set Password], and then enter your existing four-digit password. Press [OK]. "But it DOES NOT state what the default four-digit code is!There is a section specifically dedicated to finding passwords but the website won't go to the page when clicking on the link!It shows:Find the Default PasswordChange the PasswordReset the PasswordNone of the links work. The only password I can find is on the bottom label, and when I try using this password, the system says it's incorrect. After a deep dive I found that the password on the bottom was what needed to be entered on the control display. When I use it, I get an error: incorrect password. How can that be? Seems it still wants a four-digit password instead. So I reset the again four more times, and after each, I am still not able to change the password because what's printed on the bottom label doesn't work. The support site offers no other information on how to fix this. There are a few software options included with the package; however not all are free. Items such as "Kofax Power PDF" software offer only a 7-day free trial period; after that, it's CAD $169.00.Overall, it seems like this was rushed out the door. On the website, there are even spelling mistakes in the ADS-1800W documents. I've used other Brother machines in the past, and I still have a printer from 2017 that is running strong, so this is a bit of a letdown.I'm going to try contacting support to see what they can do to resolve the password issue. And will follow up.I'm giving it four stars, even though I feel it's really only a three-star item because it is mobile, provides good image and text reproduction, and the basic software works well. The fact that it can be used wirelessly, while not a big thing for me, will be something others will need. That said, when I take it along I will need to pack along the adapter so it can be powered up and connected to my laptop via USB since the WiFi direct is so flakey. I also expect that there will be firmware and software updates that will eliminate some of the above brain-hurt items.
