I've hardly seen a coffee roaster this cheap, and this doesn't seem to be a bargain basement unit. The pieces are solid and should be durable. The wire spinner that pushes the coffee beans is just high enough off the surface that none of the legs scratches the nonstick coating. Be careful that you put it back right when you take it off to clean. To disassemble the unit for initial cleaning I needed an 18 mm socket for the plastic cap, and an 8 mm socket for the metal nut that's really what holds the spinner to the shaft. I don't think the plastic cap has to be that tight, but you may want to keep an 8mm socket or wrench handy for the inner nut. A phillips screwdriver or bit is needed to install the handle on the lid.No cheap little tools are provided, which I appreciate because I rarely ever use those things that are often provided. I use my real tools instead.I won't presume to speak to its performance as a coffee roaster. I have tried roasting in an air popper, with mediocre at best results, so this is a new step for me. But it looks like all the mechanics are in place to apply heat to the beans via the base, with rough temperature control (I don't know the ramp-up and ramp-down rates), and to keep them stirred around, and any bad results I get for a while are likely to be user error. As far as I know, it looks like a very good deal.

i started roasting coffee 3 years ago. i have a sr800 in TN that i like (i also have version 1 of this item in TN), get good results, and there is not much good freshly roasted coffee in TN that isn't $25 a lb. not kidding. so all things considered, when i am in TN, i roast my own coffee as time permits.i am in CA for a while. there is plenty of fresh, affordable coffee places, but i am finding i miss roasting my own, so i bought this unit for while I am in CA.This is my 2nd one, but this one is different, and better than first one. It has more stirring paddles and turning arms, so it moves the beans around better. it has a temp gauge in the lid (the first one didn't, i added my own probe, temp is important, to see how things are progressing. both the 1st and the 2nd have temp knobs, but this one has a temp gauge that fits in the lid. And this one has a cooling pan, that will be helpful when there is more chaff. so far i use a cookie sheet to cool the beans. seems to work just fine.I like the timer, I like the temp gauge. some models don't have a timer, and it's a good back up, in case you get pulled away (hey, it happens. i know it's best to never leave it, and that is Plan A, but the timer saves my bacon if i get pulled away). the heat goes off when the timer goes off but i think the paddles keep moving. I don't remember, sorry. But the beans are still exposed to the heat of the roasting pan if they are left in, even though the heat is turned off. So, no more new heat, but the beans will still get heat from the roasting pan. Sort of like when you turn off an electric stove, you still get heat from the burner. There is a down side: if you are going for less than a very dark shinny roast, then you might not get the consistency bean to bean you are after. I am going to try using something other than the 240c max temp setting. i think a slower roast will give a more even roast, and give me a wider margin of error to avoid over roasting. i tend to go for light to medium roast, and drink pour over most of time. I do go dark once in a while with my Flair, AeroPress, and Moka Pot.When I first got it, i put about a cup of water in it, set the temp to max, and watched the water come to a boil. Purpose was to clean unit. I noticed that the roasting plate was not evening heating the water, all around the surface of the roasting plate. If you imagine an analog clock face, the cool spot was from about 2 o'clock to 4 o'clock, and the rest of the surface was bubbling. That's not good. I don't know if that's why the roast isn't even, but it doesn't help.I am going to keep the unit. The result is usable coffee, and i am pretty sure i will get better results by using a lower temp setting on the dial. Not sure the coffee is good enough to give away to my friends, but it's not horrible. It's just not great, at least so far, and I think the fault lays in the method of roasting, not this particular unit.

The collar between the coffee bean handle I loved and the lid broke. The plastic super glue I tried to repair it with did not resist the high temperature. No replacement part or handle or lid available, so the cute coffee bean handle had the be replaced. Everything else is fabulous.

If you can find the raw beans to roast, this is a lot of fun. They taste so much better when you roast them yourself. I have not tried making popcorn in this, but that is also an option.
