I bought this gate opener to replace a nine-year-old ALEKO® AC1400 Electric Sliding Gate Opener that broke one day from a poorly manufactured motor shaft (it had a void inside the metal that eventually cracked under the stress of daily use and then broke into two pieces). My gate is 8 feet high and 20 feet long that rolls on galvanized metal V track on metal wheels with ball bearing raceways. The gate is on a flat grade and can be easily opened by my wife (when the Aleko went bad and we had to do it by hand for a week until I was able to replace it with this item). So, while it's fairly large, it is easy to open and close.This opener was a bit more heavy duty than the Aleko I originally purchased so I feel fairly confident it will last longer. A couple of nice perks included the fact that this opener opens the gate much faster than the Aleko it replaced and the remote is more responsive and operates at further distances (so I can get it opening sooner as I'm driving down the alley to park in my driveway).The only cons I see to this opener is the mounting base. First of all, isn't very heavy duty. It consists of sheet metal parts that bolt together, whereas the Aleco base is welded together and uses thicker gauge sheet metal. Also, the Aleko has a heavy duty cover for the sprocket mechanism that has only two openings on each end for the chain to pass through, while this product only has a piece of sheet metal that provides a rain shield for the sprockets (leaving the sprockets exposed to the elements on three other sides). I used the heavy duty base from the Aleco to mount this unit as it is much stronger, but the fully sealed cover from the Aleco wouldn't fit this unit so I had to use the substandard sheet metal rain cover.I hope this manufacturer beefs up the base (providing a base that uses thicker sheet metal that is welded together rather than being end user assembled with nuts and bolts) and upgrades the sprocket cover from a simple rain shield to an enclosed cover that keeps the rain, dirt, leaves and other detritus from interfering with the sprockets and chain. If they did that, this unit would get 5 stars from me, because it's really a great unit otherwise.

I bought two of these guys for a sliding gate that had two panels. The installation guide is not terribly helpful. It provides enough tables and illustrations so you can muddle through. The unit ships without a keypad and finding a compatible pad is not easy due to its rolling code programming. One plus is that a single remote will handle the activating code for both units, even though they do not have a separate wire to connect the two units. It is also possible to activate the openers in opposite directions by reversing the wire positions for forward and backward on the system. Not all instructions are clearly set out. Minor nuisance was the magnetic stop control. The instruction manual was not explicit in the location so that had to be done. This is not a do it yourself project. The skill set required to get everything working on existing gates may require extensive welding, electrical skills, concrete work with lots of concrete drilling to secure the track unless you can attach with shell propelled fittings.The construction is competent and well finished. Finally, the vendor does not have available keypads and there are not many other sources for this manufacturer. What were they thinking?THREE YEARS LATER: Had to replace a unit and the replacement was not good. However the replacement for the replacement worked just fine. I am now quite used to adjusting it. When the gate rollers get untracked the gate does crazy stuff and breaks magnets. However, I picked up a bunch of high powered magnets for $15 and I now have a lifetime supply for broken magnets. Understand that it is not the drives fault that the gate has gone off the tracks, usually a stick or build up of dirt or an obstacle that prompts the derailment. But by releasing the chain by opening the locking lever, all is easy to fix. Like very easy to fix. Align the magnet with the sensor on the unit and tighten everything down and you're done. All in all it has saved 4 years of opening manually. The hardest part of the whole enterprise in installation has nothing to do with the unit but rather the gate support hardware.
