The plastic one is 100 times better.I would get the 100' plastic one from lufkin. The aluminum one is junk.

Even worse than my $10 Irwin and I thought that was bad. The line is so thin and I timed it compared to the Irwin and it took 15 seconds to reel the line in versus 3 seconds. My wife who knows nothing about construction still could tell how cheap it was. This thing is a toy, not for real use.

It seems that amazon has collected the reviews for this and several other Lufkin chalk reels together, so please note: I am reviewing the "Crescent Lufkin 100' Aluminum Chalk Reel with Blue Chalk".It's a cast aluminum reel with 100 feet of relatively thin yet strong string inside it, and it comes with a bottle of blue powdered chalk. The reel is a nicer shape than the generic aluminum reel I've been using the past few years, so the added comfort in my hand is appreciated. This reel has a molded space to store the end clip, but I had a heck of a time getting it out when I first unpacked it, so hopefully it won't get stuck in there on a regular basis, otherwise I won't bother with it.It has the typical sliding plastic door for inserting more chalk, but this door is not sliding easily (maybe because it's so new?) so I hope it loosens up with regular use. The reel handle flips over to store in its own indentation which will prevent the string from being dragged out if the end clip gets caught on something. You can disassemble this reel by removing two Phillips screws.I used to have a cheap plastic Stanley chalk reel one time many years ago, and although it was the cheapest on the market at that time it soon became my favorite -- because it was plastic so its parts never corroded, and since plastic is self-lubricating it never binded or failed to work like some of my metal reels have in the past. And it was never cold to the touch when working in cold weather, or too hot when left out in the sun. So ... after receiving this aluminum reel I find myself wondering if I might like one of the Lufkin plastic chalk line reels better. I'll use this metal one for a while to see how it works, but I'm giving it only 4 stars until I have a bit more experience with it.

This is a nicely proportioned chalk line. The body is aluminum and fits in my hand quite nicely. The refill is done with a little port on the side for a very low mass experience. All in all a very handy little chalk line. I wish it wasn't made in China like everything is, but what can I do about that?

This is essentially the same simple Lufkin chalk line I used forty years ago. There may be a few cosmetic changes to the case. I can't remember if the old ones had a center line marker for using the reel as a plumb bob. It probably did, but I don't remember because I never did so. It still has the little sliding plastic door for chalk. It still has a folding handle that dips into a hole in the body to keep the line from accidentally being pulled out of the reel while being carried--and for storage. It's just a timeless tool, well done and not capable of being improved much.
