the thing is tough and works with the other parts of the tough system 2.0 perfectly. it actually comes with two rugged inserts that have lids and compartments. I wasnt expecting these , so it was a nice surprise. Very happy with the Dewalt cases

I have been using a couple of these original small boxes for many years now. They were very strong and held a lot of stuff and weight. I decided to get one of these new ones to see if the extra space was enough to refit my impact tools and bits into one box. They did not fit in one of the older boxes. What i like:It is larger, squarer inside able to fit boxy items more readily. The top reinforcement ridges do not come down as far, so they make it easier to stuff the box full with odd shaped things. The new latches are nice, a nice positive locking feel, I must admit however i liked the old ones as well, yes they had a habit of coming off now and again, but i never had any problem with them overall. As the boxes are not anywhere near as stiff you can over stuff them a little and they will still close.... The new side latching system is ok, not perfect. They auto grab nicely, but in truth i did not want that, which is one of the reasons i held back from getting 2.0 boxes,The new small boxes have 2 parts organizers which are larger and more useful than the originals. However they also take up a lot of space. The original lid based design was sort of weird but it did allow you to store some extra small stuff without a big loss of space in the main box area. Although i like these new organizers, i will like them somewhere else, they were removed from the box.The label feature is nice. The central carry handle locks in the "open" position, like the old models, this is good. The side handle have the same angled open position that is ok, but some would find annoying to carry the box like that. It does put a lot of stress on the side handles and attachments, especially when the box is heavily loaded. The obvious water seal is fine, yes it makes it easier to make sure it is properly located. But in truth i suspect it has a lot more to do with branding that practical usage. What i don't like:The old boxes had lids that opened past vertical, so left a nice slope. These 2.0 boxes the lid stay vertical, which means on an un-level surface, or on a boat (where i do a lot of my work) the lid will tend to close when you don't want it to. Frankly not so hot, however there is no parts box attached to the lid, so it will not be so heavy if it hits your arm on the way down. To be fair to DeWalt, the new lid design does include a "notch" when fully open, so the lid does catch a little to stay in place. However the "notch" is only a plastic lip and neither strong, nor probably that durable, time will tell on that one.The old boxes had a locking vent, to relieve air pressure when trying to open (say from temp differences, or altitude), these 2.0 boxes do not, so i have had to pry it open a couple of times already, and i only got it this week ... Not an issue with this small flat box, but one for the larger boxes. The old boxes would stand on their back spines (like a briefcase) no matter how heavy they were, i could just set it down anywhere and it would stay put. These new 2.0 boxes have a thin ridge on the back and will not stay up. That is a bad design. 1.0 wins hands down here.Similar to what i like above, the box is not as rigid or strong as the 1.0 version. Good and bad.The new color scheme might look nicer, the 1.0 boxes were basically black boxes with a yellow label and 2 very small yellow latched on the sides, when stacked they did not attact any attention. The new boxes have a lot more yellow, the large yellow gasket around the box, the very large latches with branding stamped on them, and an overall much brighter appearance. Ok this might look nice when you buy them in the store, HOWEVER they now attract a lot more attention from passers by, casual looky loos, and people on the hunt for something to grab. I have seen a huge difference in the number of people (especially guys) who now give the back of the truck a long look over when these are there, rather than before when more people would ignore the muddy black boxes. Obviously DeWalt wants to improve the brand promotion, but beware of the unintended consequences, you might want to find a way of toning down all that yellow before someone wanders off with a few $K of your tools due to the bright attraction, (flies to honey etc)The new side latches (apart from being bright signals) are a nuisance (at least to me), yes they clip automatically, but they never stay flat down when you don't want them. The old ones required manual clipping and unclipping, but i liked that. When you had the box alone, the clips were flat down out of the way. These 2.0 ones stick up all the time, and are a real nuisance when working in a cramped space, sliding boxes around to get at something. These new ones have been designed assuming the user will always want to clip boxes together, well not everyone does, especially when working. I vote for the old latches to be returned on version 3.0These new boxes do not have a metal angle on the spine to attach the version 1.0 locking bar, this means they cannot be locked in a stack, but worse it contributes to the problem with it not standing up on its back when full. The 2.0 locking feature is so so, yes you can attach a (small) padlock which you couldn't with the 1.0 boxes. But you cannot lock the boxes to a rack like you could before, and the padlock would be so very easy to clip off anyway. Also the hinges are now just exposed wire, which would be easy enough to push out from the middle and grab with grippers to pull out. The 1.0 boxes had the hinges fully enclosed so could not be opened that way without cutting the box open. So the new design "stops" someone grabbing a tool and wondering off, the old design stopped someone from taking the case. Neither were that great at security, but i think 1.0 wins this one. The 1.0 hinges were in general far more durable.---Overall 4 stars. I can fit the tools and stuff i wanted in one box, great. And i like the box well enough to buy another one. It is a nice tool box, a little different from the original, but not perfect in the upgrade. I hope 3.0 combines the best of both of these versions.

Nice box, overall it's not as sturdy as the milwaukee packout boxes. But it's much smaller overall and more compact on the outside and the internal dimensions are roughly the same. I store them in tool boxes on my truck, the packout take up too much room and hold the same amount of stuff so these are better. Also they are lighter and cheaper. They are plenty strong enough I just feel like the packout would take more abuse if that was most important to you it might be the better option. But overall I like the dewalt better.
