As far as I can tell, this filter produces results very close to the original Black Pro Mist 1/4 filter by Tiffen. I think this one actually has a slightly stronger effect. I don't see any significant flaring or distortion, so that's great. My only complaint is that when I screw on the filter, the threads seem very rough and cause sort of a grinding sensation when screwing it on the lens. It doesn't seem to have damaged my lens filter threads, fortunately. I swapped between this and another filter repeatedly, and the other filter had no problems coming on and off smoothly. This one, however, continued to grind each time.

I’d rather have one of these than not

Great for anyone who's looking to add some halation to their photos/videos, on a budget. I've got a couple other diffusion filters with similar strengths. For the money this one isn't bad.

I hadn't used a filter like this before and I was worried that it would just make the photos look smudged or blurry, but I was pretty happy with how soft of an effect the photos came out with this filter. It smoothed out shadows and highlights, giving the photo a "misty" look with a lower contrast. I wouldn't use this everywhere, but for getting that dreamy effect without having to do post processing, I thought this filter worked out pretty nicely. The two attached photos are some quick handheld shots with no post processing using the same camera settings with and without the filter for comparison. The photo distance is just slightly different, but at least the cat was nice enough to maintain the pose between shots while I put the filter on.

Black diffusion filters help create a glow around the light sources, sort of like a halo effect around the lights. It will also help take away some of the sharpness that comes from today's super high quality digital cameras. I got the 1/4 version and it worked out great for me. The image is soft enough while giving a nice halation effect to the practical lights.
