Halti Headcollar

What is a Halti Headcollar & how does it work?

The Halti stops dogs from pulling by steering the head so the body has to follow. It was invented in 1979 by Dr Roger Mugford and is approved and recommended by vets and canine professionals worldwide. Its unique patented design works by gently directing the dog’s head, steering him into the desired position, just as a headcollar works to steer a horse. The Halti makes training and behaviour modification of dogs practical and safe. It can be used in a number of ways: either as a passive means to simply stop dogs pulling or as an active training aid. Millions have been sold worldwide to grateful owners of pulling dogs.

What Makes the Halti Unique?

The Halti is made from lightweight, yet strong nylon webbing. It is designed for comfort and allows your dog freedom to pant and yawn.

Halti features a unique, on-off muzzling action to close the dog’s jaws, helping to give you greater control. All Halti 's now feature a padded noseband for extra comfort. The 'standard' Halti has neoprene padding and the 'padded' Halti , features leather padding. Each Halti comes complete with a free Halti Safety Link that connects to the dog’s collar, for extra security and a comprehensive fitting and training guide.

Halti Harness & Halti Lead

The Halti Harness was designed by Dr Roger Mugford to stop a dog pulling by providing front control. It applies the same principle as the Halti Headcollar but by steering the dog from his chest rather than by his head. The Halti Harness puts owners in control of dogs that don’t like or cannot wear a Halti Headcollar. The patented front control system steers the dog from his chest and shoulders - and thus sets the direction in which he can move. Unlike other designs of anti-pull harnesses, the Halti does not put painful pressure on the body and is always comfortable. Ideally used with a double-ended lead to give maximum control, the back ring above the shoulders acts as a brake while the front lead steers.

The multi-functional Halti Training Lead, was designed by Dr Roger Mugford to control, guide and tether a dog in everyday situations. It is made from super-soft padded material, which is extremely strong, yet very comfortable to hold. It can be used in 8 versatile different functions, it is 2m in length and is double-ended for flexibility. Ideal for use with Halti Headcollar and Harness or just as an everyday lead. Available in two widths; S (w:15mm), L (w:25mm) and in a choice of Black or Red.

Halti Headcollar Fitting Tips

Time should be taken when accustoming a dog to the Halti, so that he has a positive association with it. Initially place the noseband flat in your hand and feed the dog treats, so that he is happily putting his nose through it. When he accepts it, the neck section can be secured so it’s snug but not too tight. On a correctly fitted Halti, the noseband naturally sits half way down the nose and away from the eyes. When you release pressure on the chin strap, make sure the dog can fully open his mouth without restriction.

When introducing the Halti, continual praise and reward using treats is recommended so wearing the Halti becomes a positive experience. Refer to the instruction manual for more information on how to do this. Never leave the Halti on an unsupervised dog as he may chew it.

I don't get why this product has such a high return rate, unless people may have gotten the wrong measurements for their doggo. But oh my goodness, it's still as amazing as when we were first introduced to it in 2001!Back then, we had a 100 lbs Labrador mix who was crossed with all kinds of ornery, and even after obedience classes and all kinds of training, he would pull so hard he'd regularly yank me down to the ground, break free from my grip, and take off for adventures around our neighborhood (namely running to the nearby cow pasture to roll in cow patties. Which really stunk. Washing cow poo out of dog fur outside on a cold autumn afternoon is not fun, would not recommend).I'm not exaggerating at all when I say the halti collar saved my dog from being dropped off at the shelter, because my parents were just about fed up with the stubborn boy. But then our vet recommended trying the halti collar. And man, was it a game changer! All of a sudden, we could easily walk him! There was no more tugging, pulling, or knocking us to the ground. We could actually get him to heel. And, with positive reinforcement, he grew to love it, even running up to us to put his muzzle inside the halti because he knew it meant we were going out on another delightful walk! And here I am now, over 20 years later, finally ordering my second halti collar as my last one sadly bit the dust, and it's just as good as all those years ago! My Caucasian Shepherd/Pyrenees cross is doing great with it, and I'm so grateful to be able to be able to experience the wonderful joy of using a halti with a large dog all over again! I love how they've improved the design, with extra padding in the halter around the nose area, as well as the fabulous added safety strap to help prevent the halter from slipping off the muzzle! It also has added reflective material which my old one did not have. And, after just a couple of positive training sessions, I'm already noticing a difference in his tugging, and I'm controlling him with a lot more ease.If you have a big dog or a hard to manage dog to walk, I absolutely encourage you to get the halti! It has been a favorite dog walking collar of mine for over 2 decades, and I plan on continuing to use it in the years to come. Definitely recommend!
