I produced a video podcast for about two years, and one of the most frustrating aspect was that high elbow joint of traditional table mounted boom arm stands getting in the way of people's faces. This one solves that problem completely. Took a bit to actually figure out the physics of how it works, but now that I have, it makes total sense, and I'll never go back to the old kind!

From the listing it's hard to tell, but this arm has two very secure joints on the base that are held with thumb screws. The main elbow has two friction joints that are very firm, yet they move smoothly when manipulating them into position. However, I don't see any obvious way to be able to adjust those if they wear and start to become loose. Perhaps they are spring loaded where that wouldn't happen? Time will tell.I mounted my DSLR camera on the end of this arm with confidence and the it's holding it securely. I'm impressed with the thumb-screw ball joint and the friction joint on the end. This combination makes it very adaptable and easy to maneuver your camera or other device into the best position. The arm is not super rigid, so if you are prone to banging on a desk or jumping around you'll likely set th arm into a slight wobble! If you use it with a microphone this may not be an issue at all. Seeing how this is made, the wobble could probably be improved by using gaffer tape over the wire covers on the arms to reducer to twisting. Those wire covers are actually a nice feature because, once removed, you have one side of the square tubing open to lay your cables inside. The arms seem to be made of lightweight aluminum and they have metal covers that are held in place with magnets. The desk clamp U-bracket is a good thickness and feels secure. I got this arm for a DSLR camera and am happy that this is secure enough to hold it. I think it will be getting a lot of use.

The mechanical design is sturdy and holds up my rode podmic with zero flexion. The problem is that cable management is horrible. The only way you could get your microphone cord through is if you had a USB mic because they cable path opening is too narrow to fit an XLR cable end. Also, the product page information is incorrect. One cable path opening is on the top, as shown in the product page, but the other is on the bottom. So even if used properly, a good amount of the cable will still be visible.
