BMW wanted $1100 for new front rotors and pads on our e70 X5 when they did an inspection while the car was there for another job. Pads at 4mm need replacing but I wasn't sure about the rotors. I bought this tool and found that the rotors are at about 50% of usable life. For our SUV, new is 30mm and discard thickness is 28.4mm with mine measuring about 29.1-29.4mm. A digital micrometer that measures rotor thickness would be more precise but for $15 this tells me exactly what I want to know which is how close they are to 28.4mm.
