The entire filter is aluminum and will not rust, including the frame. It has a plastic pull tab for removal.I discovered the frame is also removable and held together by a single stainless screw. That may be helpful if you need to remove the frame to fit in a tighter space or cut/fold the screens if you require smaller screen (That is how I verified the screen actually has 5 layers).I guess you could also use the frame/screens for other uses, but note the 'screen' is comprised of 5 separate/varied individual screens when you remove it from the frame.
