I bought this to keep in the truck during hunting season. I’m very happy with the purchase. It’s very well balanced and very very sharp. I have not had to sharpen it yet. It’s definitely worth the money that you spend. It’s a great size and DC to store in the vehicle.

I have had many Kershaw products over the years. I have never been disappointed. This hatchet/axe is no exception. It strikes a nice compromise between a full ax and a light hatchet. Light enough to be carried in a pack, but gives enough weight and leverage to be useful in the field for everything from chopping small trees to spitting wood. The thin head allows it to be useful in many bush-craft projects. I carry a small file and a medium Arkansas stone to keep the edge in shape.

I purchased the Kershaw Deschutes ”Bearded” Hatchet Camp Ax mainly for performing camping-related tasks, like cutting small branches, but not for chopping large logs.Pros- Great size (14 inches in length) and weight (1 lb 9 oz) for easy travel during hiking, backpacking, and camping- Full tang construction- comfortable handle- comes equipped with sheath and nylon carrying case, so no need to buy an extra sheath- Great for chopping small wood pieces at home- Very sharp. Made from high-carbon steel, so the edge of this axe already comes sharpened and ready to use out of the box, but you can make it as sharp as you like- Very balanced weight. Compared to a lot of camp axes I've tested, this tool doesn't feel too heavy, bulky, or unbalanced, so no matter where you hold it, it feels good in your hands.- great for carving and shaving wood for kindling Cons- Due to the size and weight of this axe, you will end up exerting more energy than necessary chopping and splitting larger logs- Because the axe is made from high-carbon steel, it will need regular sharpening after each use for maximize efficiency.- the butt (poll) of the axe is relatively thin, so it's not ideal for hammeringIs the Kershaw Deschutes ”Bearded” Hatchet Camp Ax better than Other Axes? The short answer is it depends on your needs. I did a lot of research on several hatchets, axes, and tomahawks and watched dozens of YouTube demonstration videos to compare them all, even visited local military surplus and camping supply stores to compare each axe. The demonstration videos are how I arrived at selecting this particular axe. There was only 1 axe that rated higher on my list, but I didn't purchase it based on its high price. Overall, it's a great tool capable of tree and brush trimming, but you won't want to cut down a large tree with it.
