After watching a series of YouTube videos on recording technologies over time, I decided to record a few installments on the compact cassette tape. I secured a decent 3-head deck and prepped it with a good cleaning and new belts. But what about the media?I figured it would be cool to have a signal-in vs. signal-out comparison of Type 0, Type I, and Type II cassettes (I don't really want to do Type IV, unless someone is offering some for free). Type 0 is pretty much garbage, and neither it, nor Type I are hard to find. Type II, on the other hand, is a bit more scarce. Are Maxell XLIIs the pinnacle of Type II recording media? Perhaps not, but they are pretty representative of a "typical" chrome tape you could buy back in the day.Despite being new, old stock, my package arrived as a single, unopened brick of tapes. I've used two so far for my experiments, and they seem to be in good shape, with no dusting or flaking. As for the performance, they are pretty good in my Nakamichi. I level them around +5/+6... above that there's distortion. Type IIs are a good way of combating hiss, without resorting to one of the NR strategies.The per-tape price of Type IIs is prohibitive to the point where you are not probably going to want to amass a huge stock, but I think it's nice to have some of them (you know... just because). Recommended.

Arrived quickly and in very good condition. The tapes still live up to their reputation, unbelievable quality!

Best value, 8 perfect cassettes in a 4 x 2 brick. I purchased 5 from another vendor and 4/5 had damaged cases, cassettes are OK, though. Buy these.
