Context: I'm an IT professional, with a background in UNIX, perimeter security and networking in general. This review is based on a week of ownership, so if things go pear-shaped, I may come back and revise, but so far I'm absolutely blown away by a) the feature set at this price point - I've not found anything else that comes close, b) the performance; c) the breadth and quality of the tooling and addtional packages available for both management and monitoring of the device and the connected networks (which tooling, by the way, comes at the low, low price of abolutely free) - I've worked with kit costing orders of magnitude more that is much more of a headache to look after; and d) the quality of the documentation (which will also teach you networking basics and even some more advanced topics, if you've not come across such things before). There is a little bit of a culture shock adapting from Cisco/Dell/JunOS to RouterOS, but that's just a syntactical thing, since the underlying concepts are, of course, common between the vendors.Lastly, as others have rightly noted, if what you want is a zero-config out-of-the-box device to get on teh Interwebs, or do some basic network interconnection, this ain't it - look elsewhere.

Not a beginner friendly router, very sophisticated setup required. If you use behind Kpn ONT, do not forget to attach vlan with id=6 under WAN port for internet and define PPPOE client for it. If you use telephone or TV some other vlans required too.Unfortunately, in terms of internet speed I couldn’t make it work as fast as default router of my ISP. I tried to compare and looks like ~200Mbps loss comes with MikroTik which is quite high.

If youre not an expert for networking equipment, dont even bother and stay away from Mikrotik. But if you are into command-line based configuration FROM SCRATCH, than Mikrotik is your friend. You can do a lot of things with Router OS and nowadays ChatGPT o3-mini can provide pretty good help but still, the comfort of just using an UI and setting up a few things is not the Mikrotik-Way.I was coming from TP-Link Omada (but have an background as CCIE) and for me being used to Cisco CLI, it took still a little getting used to, its not as flexible as Cisco and also not as easily accessible (I find Ciscos CLI rather intuitive tbh, more than Mikrotik, but on the other hand, this device costs 1000 times less than a small Cisco router.Once IPv6 Fastrack will be available in ROS7.18 im hoping to get full 1GBit line speed on my two WAN connections. For now only IPv4 is going full Gigabit, when the traffic is rather constant.What is exceptionally:the router only uses 2.7 Watts for idle operation and rarely exceeds 4 Watts under full load.The only thing I hate is the lack of proper PoE support. I dont understand Mikrotik why they just dont stop using the NON-standard passive PoE that is not support by ANYTHING on the market. So you have to use a PoE splitter to power the device (or just use a 12V plug). Would have been $1 more to add a proper PoE chipset.

This device is incredibly powerful—almost too powerful. As other reviews have mentioned, it definitely comes with a steep learning curve, especially if you want to dive into customisation. Even advanced users might find it challenging to get everything working just right. That said, the level of control and flexibility it offers is absolutely wild. If you’re willing to invest the time, the possibilities are nearly endless.
