This is the real thing when it comes to artist charcoal. They are manufactured to the highest of specs and show continuity of quality from one stick to the next. I recommend this product.

Fantastic grey, beautiful blacks and your hands stay quite clean. And you can sharpen this charcoal as well.

I had high expectations for this as generic natural charcoal sticks can be too soft and dark, and if you want to get specific lines, you either have to sharpen the charcoal often or be very very careful when putting down lines. I thought this H grade charcoal would solve my problem, I imagined this would create light marks for a block-in and is hard enough to not need a lot of sharpening often. However, the actual product was too hard and inconsistent. After I've sharpened it to a point, I had to keep turning it around in all sorts of angles in order to get the charcoal to come off and stick to the paper as otherwise, half of the time, it only leaves scratch marks, which damages the paper and nothing else.Edit: My initial rating was 2 stars but I added 1 more because I recently ordered a pad of Strathmore series 500 Bristol paper with vellum surface and this charcoal seems to work just fine. There were no scratchings and the charcoal was very consistent and amazing. I think this has to do with the tooth of the paper that allows for the material to work properly. However, I didn't give this a higher rating as it requires a very specific condition for the charcoal to work. You can't casually use it on a lower grade paper, not even the Strathmore series 400. One may argue that this expensive charcoal should be used on equally high quality paper anyway but I think it's important that it could be used for sketching and experimentation on a different surface to fully get used to the material. Also the Strathmore 500 cannot be found in every country so it might not even be possible to use this charcoal in countries with few good art supplies.
