I have the original Orange Pi Zero and used to use it to run a pihole DNS server on my home network. It worked great until the RAM requirements for pihole outstripped what the board was capable. I eventually replaced it with a Raspberry Pi 3 and wanted another board to run as a backup server. With the cost of Raspberry Pi products over the last few years, I thought of Orange Pi again as a potentially more affordable replacement. Sadly, this board is hampered by buggy hardware and software that, in my case, make it unsuitable, even as a basic server. I've had persistent issues getting this board to update the installed software and / or reboot cleanly, both on Armbian and the official Debian image provided by Orange Pi. I can't make heads or tails of exactly what's going on, as I don't have a UART adapter on hand, but every time the board is supposed to reboot, it basically halts the OS and never shuts down. Even after unplugging it from power and plugging it back in, it will refuse to boot correctly. Sometimes, unplugging it, removing the microSD card, plugging it back in, then unplugging it from power again and booting it with the microSD card reinstalled will get it working again, but this isn't always the case, and shouldn't be necessary to use this board in a basic headless configuration. For the price of the board plus shipping, I'm very disappointed with my purchase, and troubleshooting this issue over several weeks took longer than the return period.

I was looking for an alternative SBC for my FDM printers so I could use Octoprint to remotely control them. The Raspberry Pi's are hard to find at MSRP and ridiculously priced at the moment. These boards were initially around $18 dollars, however these came with a heatsink, power supply and case for $33.Much better then the alternative pi prices for ones that are readily available. I was able to find a tutorial on youtube that got me up and running with octoprint. I've not tried these boards with other applications, I installed ubuntu server, docker and octoprint and everything runs fine. Probably my only gripe is the length of the shipping time though they did arrive midway within the date range specified.

With Raspberry Pi's in short supply and more expensive, the Orange Pi Zero 2 serves as a great substitute at a better price point. Ships from China so you'll need to plan your purchase accordingly, but still shipped pretty quick (couple of weeks) with that in consideration. The kit option that contains a case, heatsink, and power supply is ideal so you don't have to hunt those pieces down separately, and makes for a professional looking device. Only thing I would change is to have an opening for the Wi-Fi antenna in the case, and a clip on the side of the case to hold the antenna in place. Works great with the Ubuntu Core operating system. Currently just using for a sign board application to present manufacturing data on a TV screen on the shop floor. But can think of lots of other ways it can be used.
