BOTTOM LINE: Comfy swim trunks; have an inner compression liner (with a side cell pocket). Elastic band does the job of holding them up but these also have an internal string-tie in case you're worried about losing your shorts at an inopportune moment. LOL. The tactical urban gray camo pattern is subtle and nice-looking without coming off too 'mucho macho'.THOUGHTS: Wife & I have a couple of vacations coming up this summer and I decided that I could use a new pair of trunks. The ones I have now are kinda ratty and at least 15 - 20 yrs old. These Palmyth brand trunks are pretty nice and checked off all the boxes I needed for a well-made pair of swim trunks that will hopefully last for a long time. I'm not sure about the compression liner thing, but it's not an annoyance nor a distraction. I'm sure I'll get used to them. Only gripe about these is that the sizing seems to run a little on the snug side. Not a big deal; if you're unsure, just go up one size. The material is 100% synthetic, so there's little worry about shrinkage. And it also means faster dry time. I'm happy with them but will come back with edits if there are any issues down the road.A word of warning: that cellphone pocket on the inner compression liner is kind of convenient ...just don't forget about it and jump into the water with your cell tucked in it, or you'll be sorry. LOL

My son loves these swim shorts. He especially likes the zip up side pockets and the lining shorts (and the lack of a mesh liner). These fit true to size and have a drawstring to adjust the waist fit as needed. The under lining is very soft and stretchy and thin. The outer material is a soft typical swim trunk material. The length is above the knee but not too short at all. The price is on the higher end of what I'd consider being reasonable for this set of swim shorts. Not unreasonably high, just at the higher end of what I personally think I'd be willing to pay for these shorts.

I live on the water, but I have a surprising dearth of decent swim trunks. Most of them never seem to fit quite right, and all the various styles always seem to have significant drawbacks. Traditional trunks have irritating mesh sand traps sewn right in, while board shorts are usually too long—and usually too loose—for my liking. So when I came across these new "compression shorts" style trunks, I decided to give them a go. I’m glad I did; they’re pretty darn good. The internal compression shorts material is far superior to typical mesh liners, and they help the trunks feel more secure than other options. Sizing is also pretty much right on for most people. I’d say these run slightly small, but unless you’re right on the edge, you should order the same size you’d normally order for any similar item.NOTE: The Palmyth sizing chart on the product page doesn’t really make much sense in terms of male measurements. The XL shorts I ordered unambiguously won’t fit someone with 46.5-inch "hips," as the chart indicates. I’m a size 40 "waist" (which, in male measurement terms, means "hips"), and these are bordering on snug. If you wear a size 42 or larger in pants/jeans/shorts, you’ll need to order these in a 2XL (if available). The print is high quality, the materials are top-notch, and the stitching is robust. The only thing that about these shorts that strikes me as unnecessary or overwrought is the hidden phone pocket. It’s certainly big enough to hold most phones; that’s not the issue. The issue is that it’s a seriously silly place to keep your phone. Forget it’s there just long enough to absentmindedly jump in the water, and these trunks go from reasonably priced to ludicrously expensive in a splash. It’s much better to use the pocket for a hotel room key or a few bucks or something. Anything but your cell phone.PROS👍 High end look and feel👍 Quality materials and stitching👍 True-to-size fitment for most people👍 Compression shorts liner keeps the sand out👍 No chafing or annoying salt rashes👍 Two front pockets with solid (non-mesh) liners👍 Small rear pocket on right leg panelCONS👎 Internal phone pocket makes no sense👎 Confusing sizing chart; if on the edge, size up👎 No back pocket👎 No 2XL options at the time of this writingIn addition to my score using Amazon’s five-star rating system, here’s a more granular breakdown of the item using my own 10-point scale across eight main product categories:✔️ Listing Accuracy: 8/10 — The shorts are pictured and described accurately, but the Palmyth sizing chart is a little bit wonky.✔️ Presentation/Bonuses: 10/10 — Nice, attractive presentation. Palmyth takes first impressions seriously, and it shows.✔️ Appearance/Aesthetics: 10/10 — These are about as swag as my sweet Rip Curl Volley 16s.✔️ Build Quality/Materials: 10/10 — Very impressive materials and construction.✔️ Utility/Fitness For Purpose: 9/10 — One point deduction for that "phone pocket." That has to be the worst phone pocket ever.✔️ Versatility/Additional Uses: 10/10 — They’re good for in and out of the water. All-day comfort.✔️ Durability/Ruggedness: 10/10 — Good thickness and strong stitching.✔️ Value For Money: 10/10 — Value priced compared to top name brands.

It's always a guessing game with online size charts. I take a 34 waist in jeans. The large size was the right call.Haven't had a chance to try them in the water yet - but did a bike ride to my gym, worked out there, and rode home with them (very warm day for April). I often use swim trunks as cycling and gym shorts. The liner is nowhere near as supportive or as long as real cycling shorts; but they suit my needs. It's handy to have the pockets. I think they'll be fine at the pool and the beach. or even sand volleyball.

My husband had been hanging onto the same pair of swim shorts for over a decade, so to say he needed a new pair is an understatement. He’s always worn spandex underwear underneath his swimsuit to avoid any awkward wardrobe malfunctions, so he was especially excited to try these because of the built-in fitted liner—and they absolutely deliver. The liner stays in place and provides the support he needs, which means no extra layers and way more comfort. He also really appreciates the elastic waistband and drawstring combo, which makes it easy to get just the right fit. He’s finally got a pair of swim trunks that he feels good in—no more uncomfortable adjusting, just splashing around and playing with the kids, once the outdoor pool opens up that is.
