Amazing that something small as a pencil can detect gas leaks but it does as advertised. It is very easy to use. Simple button controls. Well worth the money.

This unit was compact, came with a connected clip, and a case (besides the box it comes in).Having a heavy wind storm in my area for the past 2 days, and still going today, I was unable to do my BBQ propane test. Though for safety reasons, I decided to do something on a smaller scale. BIC.The detector worked and maxed out right away (after the 30sec warm up requirement/suggestion) when I pressed the bic lighter about 1-2 inches away from the detector. This tells me it does work! However I have yet to try other gasses that it mentions. We periodically have gas leak "Scares" where we wish we had one of these. It will come in handy to test gas line and fittings/joints around gas equipment etc. Just probe it around slowly and it should show you if its leaking. It picked up the small gas flow of a bic lighter so this method will in theory work when probing. This is more of a probe obviously that a fixed detector, because battery powered only. I'm not sure how sensitive in proximity to the leak vs how much gas is leaking or contained in one area for the detecter to detect... I cannot yet vouch for the battery life.Overall I feel it's a good device to have handy if you have gas appliances in or around your house. Not sure if it will detect bathroom gas, if you know what I mean. If its methane, then I'm sure it will!I hope to update review as soon as any other findings arise.

Finally, a natural gas / LP gas detector that works easy, doesn't break the bank and isn't the size of a 1980's desktop computer. These little pen-style detectors are really good at what they do, and what they do is detect natural gas and liquid propane leaks, even pretty small ones. They have two levels of detection sensitivity, which is a good and sensible arrangement.Things to note:a.) The startup is not exactly intuitive, but you'll figure it out. Two buttons, press the RED one to start and the green one...or maybe "BOTH" (?) to shut down. hmmm... something lost in translation there.b.) Get it right, especially shut-off, because if you restart it when meaning to shut down, it has to go through the whole 30 second calibration thing before you can try again to shut it off. A little practice ahead of time is probably a good idea. :-)c.) Make sure you insert the batteries "the right way". I know...you're thinking "DUH - this reviewer is an idiot!" OK maybe so, but which way is the "right way"? You tell me. The instructions only say "the right way". They do not SHOW which is "They right way", and in the one little drawing that hints at the battery insertion, THEY SHOW IT BACKWARDS. Yup...maybe the reviewer isn't quite as stupid as you thought he was? ;-)d.) Note that this item can also sense certain kinds of refrigerant gasses. Not saying you should use it that way...just pointing out that some refrigerant gas classes now contain enough butane derivatives that the sensor will probably trigger from them. YMMV. Just saying.Overall, a handy tool, and the fact that it comes with a nice set of duracell branded batteries, a pouch and there are TWO OF THEM in the kit makes it a five star winner for me - even with the slight quirks I've noted.Five stars - do your practice. Put the batteries in the "right way" which is POSITIVE TERMINAL INTO THE DEVICE FIRST.Cheers, and happy gas sniffing!

Simple to use with good quick start directions; deeper explanations for those willing to read them. So far it appears to detect volatile fumes from several of the claimed sources. Tested with natural gas from a stove, a small pool of old time cigarette lighter fluid, and even 94 proof gin -- All registered as flammable without question. The box lists many other items of a related sort and we will continue to test them, but so far it seems to work exactly as advertised.Comes with fresh big-name-brand batteries, and a useful padded case to keep it from getting knocked about in a tool box. Padded case also has a small pressure clip to attach to a lanyard or a key ring, or a tool kit.Light weight, large pen-sized unit, comes with a pocket clip to keep it handy in work kit. Only two controls -- On/off and Hi / Lo sensitivity make it super simple to use. Highly recommended, will likely be gifted by me to several friends with gas barbecues other propane powered items. (Especially that one guy who can't understand why his propane seems to run out som much faster than others with the same model BBQ. Leak maybe? Let's find out! )As a California resident, one of these will go in our earthquake supplies and one in the kitchen tool drawer to check for leaks after the inevitable temblor. . As a former science teacher would have especially wanted on to check gas-valves for lab burners from time to time. The use seem limited only by the needs of the user of volatile compounds. :-D
