The faceplate on this item was not machined and had no way to fit to the bottom half or even screw into the side plates. Would not recommend OpenSourceSDRLab for any of my clients.

Like a few others below, I too had screen issues. After trying to use the reset button and using the DFU-UTIL I still got nothing. So i removed the battery pack and pulled the small watch battery off. I then disconnected and reseated the the screen ribbon cable, put the watch battery back in and connected the internal battery and put the hack RF on the board. I was then able to connect to the firmware update utility and the screen came back up.The overall quality of the device isn't bad. There are no instructions for assembly but I was able to get it together in under 20mins. I did snap one screw head off of the very small top/bottom plate holders, so I recommend screwing them in without the other parts to clean out the powder coat. For first timer buyers/users I suggest getting the screen working/installing firmware and speaker before you put it in the enclosure, since you'll take it in/out about 5 times before you get it fully working.

While this version of the PortaPack boasts a sturdy aluminum case and attractive price point for DIY enthusiasts, setting it up can be a significant hurdle. My experience involved:• Unclear instructions: The provided setup guide proved insufficient, leading to frustration and confusion.• Black screen issue: Despite troubleshooting, encountered a persisting black screen problem.• Firmware complexities: Installing the required Mayhem firmware, though potentially necessary, is not explicitly mentioned in the official instructions.• SD card limitations: Cards larger than 32GB are unsupported and require a workaround (partitioning and formatting).• Disassembly concerns: The case design might make future disassembly cumbersome.• Screw quality: The included screws are prone to shearing if overtightened. It's important to note that this review reflects my experience and may not apply to all units. However, it highlights potential challenges that others may encounter, especially those without extensive DIY experience.Consider carefully your technical skills and comfort level before investing in this version of PortaPack. While the build quality and price are enticing, navigating the setup process might require additional research and troubleshooting.

Not sure what projects that other reviewer has completed in the past, sure wasn't READING THE INSTRUCTIONS lol. Once the Mayhem firmware is flashed on the HackRF, and you assemble the aluminum case (bit of a kludgy design, but you're not taking it apart more than once. Nice fit and finish on the casing, no apprentice marks to be seen. The screws that come with it are typical chinesium-grade and will shear off if you torque them more than snug. Thankfully, they're such terrible quality material that it shouldn't be hard to extract any that you may break off while assembling.Anyways, great product! And keep in mind the other reviewer is most likely incapable of reading directions, probably best to ignore that review. If you have half a brain you'll figure out how to flash the proper firmware instead of mashing buttons with no screen for half a day.Last note, SD Cards above 32gb are FLAT OUT NOT SUPPORTED. It's due to the shitty chipset the manufacturer found in a dumpster behind Foxconn in Guangzhou and used to save a few pennies. It will accept a 64gb card as long as you chop it in half (IN DISK MANAGER, NOT PHYSICALLY), create a 32gb partition and leave the second 32 BLANK/UNFORMATTED.Hope this helps! And hopefully the other reviewer figures this out, and where his damn car keys are.
