Due to the thicker diameter, a pre-drilled pilot hole is required. The hex head allows for it to be tightened with more torque than can be used on a phillips head screw.

The screws were exactly what I needed to secure the post to my deck supports. Much cheaper than I could find locally also.

They're lag screws, 1/2in x 6in, and they're galvanized!
