I began drumming 22 years ago (in June, it will be 23 years) when I was 16--on my 16th Birthday, actually. That day I got my 1st kit-a 2nd hand Ludwig Super Classic 4-piece (any educated drummer will know that I was REALLY fortunate-that's NOT a beginner's kit, it was Ludwig's flagship series @ the time. A fully Professional Model) in a gold oyster pearl wrap finish! Now, @ the age of 38, I am still in love w/ the instrument as i was then, much MORE in fact! I've been blessed w/ wonderful experiencies-recording, playing live, studying w/ great players, etc. Now to the sticks. Ever since I began playing, I used ProMark's Neil Peart Autograph Model 747 white oak w/ a wood tip. That is until a few years ago when a student introduced me to the ProMark Simon Phillips Autograph Model-hickory w/ a wood tip. I was open-minded; after all it was ProMark & I love Simon Phillips. The odd thing that I noticed is that the bead (or tip) was perfectly rounded, similar to a marching tenor stick. Since I keep every drum, cymbal, stick, & drumhead catalogs from the last 10 years to present, I looked it up in the ProMark 2009 book. It said that Simon developed the rounded bead for better articulation on the cymbals & to avoid 'pits' on the heads. I loved them & now, it's the stick that i use for all. It's comfortable in both Matched & Traditional grips, & suits all styles of misuc. It's .555" in diameter (identical to the Neil Peart Model). The only complaint is that hickory is weaker than oak, so I go through them much more often that I did w/ Peart's sticks, but it's worth it because hickory is also lighter in weight. The lighter stick makes it easier for me to get around the kit faster--& after all of those years used to the oak, I can breeze around now! Great make, great model, great sticks in all!
