This was recorded in 1993/1994. I am just wondering how I managed to miss out on this gem for almost one quarter of a century!

This 3-CD set has all the solo songs that Purcell wrote, and it furnishes a magnificent example of the genius of the man; the word-setting is stunning and the accompaniment is brilliant, Even though the set is two decades old, the sound quality is fine and the soloists here are all first-rate, as is the chamber ensemble. You need, when listening, not to put them on in a continuous stream like a song cycle, but to choose a one or twoto listen to in detail at any one time. You'll find, as often as not, that you'll want to stop after one playing int order to listen to it again immediately. The notes accompanying the set are very full (not just the song texts) and help to put these songs, to texts often by rather ordinary poets, into their contexts.

Wonderful, wonderful music. I've recently found a love for everything Purcell. I already owned all of the operas, semi-operas, chamber music and theatre music so embarked on an exploration of his 87 songs, all contained in this collection. Purcell was a genius. Nothing more needs to be said. There is beauty in every song that he wrote. This collection is excellent. The words to every song are contained in the booklet along with an explanation of each song. For somebody that needs to know what he is listening to and where it fits in the Purcell story this is important. The recordings themselves are excellent. The singers performing in this collection are all top notch. The musicians brilliant. To summarise, this collection is worth every single penny and more besides!

Il faut beaucoup de temps pour découvrir la compilation proposée, qui est très riche. L'écriture musicale est splendide, mais hors de la mode actuelle car les rythmes sont simples et la basse obligée simple aussi, bien que fort habile. Alors ? Alors le charme réside dans la beauté des timbres vocaux, merveilleusement mise en valeur par le compositeur. Il y a beaucoup de variété, bien que presque toujours dans les registres supérieurs ; l'interprétation en haute contre est à mon sens une savoureuse réussite. Revenons sur terre : excellent rapport qualité / prix.
