Perfect for building shade structures

I was building a cold frame for some of my plants using 1/2” EMT conduit and purchased these for joining the pieces together. I was impressed with the fact that there were additional holes in the fittings where I could add a few machine screws if necessary to secure the connections. Unfortunately, it’s necessary to use sleeves (included) on the ends of the conduit in order to fit into the connectors properly. It proved to be nearly impossible to get all of the conduit pieces secured in the connectors at once, and the sleeves had very poor grip which made them slide out of the fittings far too easily. This in turn made the connectors impossible to tighten properly, which meant the whole project was a bust. I found another brand of fastener that, while still difficult to work with, was at least sturdier and a bit longer in order to grip the sleeves better. Overall, I would probably never do another project using 1/2” EMT, as the available fasteners aren’t really made to accommodate them (thus the necessity of the sleeves). I really dislike leaving negative reviews, but in this case, this product was completely unusable for me.

I made them work for my project but required some work. Only works on 1/2 emt not 3/4 Must use the adapters for 1/2. I also added sheet metal screws to secure.

This straight edge is awesome and and at a reasonable price. I have checked it against my surface plate and found it to be precision straight. I use it to check the milled surfaces of engine blocks and other machinery that cannot be placed on a surface plate. The corners along the edge are very sharp and had some minor burrs. I opted to run some 400 grit along the corners to prevent cutting myself. Sometimes a little more thickness would nice, particularly when using it on a sloped plane and having to rely on even hand pressure to make sure it is sitting flat to the datum.Amazon packaging for this item was sub-par considering it is a precision instrument. It was practically floating in a large box that allowed one of the ends to ding. Thankfully that didn't bend it, or hurt the precision.

As with every other Starrett product I own, this one delivers. It is thick and is straight. In comparison to others this one is straight in each direction and has not bent. The only thing I do not like about it is how heavy it is. It must be held securely so it will not fall out of your hands. Often I have thought that it would be nicer to have a heat treated straightedge that is lighter and would not bend. However the thickness of this straightedge allows it to sit on the piece you are checking without tipping over.
