It measures tread depth. It's easy to read. You're not going to get sub-millimeter accuracy, but you really don't need that, right? Great for keeping tabs on all the tires we've got running around. Doesn't feel like it'll fall apart anytime soon.

I have a slow leak in a tire on a car I intend to replace in the near future. The tires are getting old, but obviously I don’t want to buy new ones if the car is on its way out. I went to a tire repair shop to get the leak fixed, but the tech said that they couldn’t legally fix it because the tread depth was at the legal minimum of 2/32”.I had recently checked the tread depth, but with the type of depth gauge that shows 32nds in increments of 4. So while I was pretty sure that the tire was over 2/32”, I had a sliver of doubt. So I left without buying two new tires, as he recommended, and bought this Steelman gauge. Two days later I checked the tread depth with the new gauge and found that every groove easily exceeded 2/32”. So it seems the tech was banking on me accepting his bogus measurement in order to sell me tires. This dial tread depth gauge is well-made, looks good and includes a case with snap closure. It is well worth the price, and can help protect you from unscrupulous car guys.

If you are in the market for a digital tire depth gauge this is probably the one to buy this gauge is the exact same one as the one sold by MAC tools, and about 15$ cheaper nicely measures in metric and imperial/SAE, it has three modes Millimeters, inches and fractions, the range is 0-25.4mm/0-1" and it seems fairly accurate, it has a nice clear display and comes with a battery (cr2032 3volt), the construction is mostly plastic as you'd expect for the price, only issue I have is it feels a bit light and cheap and the actual plunger/pin is plastic but at the end of the day its a digital tool for less then 30$ and I'd recommend it if you want something like this even if it's a bit unnecessary. Or if you are a tire tech/doing lots of inspections this takes all the thinking out of it!

I bought one of those fancy digital ones. No idea why I thought I needed yet another gadget that needs a battery. Dumb. These are much easier to read, housing is made of metal, and there is no math involved (the digital ones are mostly inches or mm.... in DECIMAL, which is not the way we measure tread depth in the US, we measure in fractions of an inch. Needless to say, this needs no buttons (digital ones generally have THREE buttons, and yet you STILL have to do the math..... waaaaay overly complicated for such a simple task, may as well just use a quarter to measure your tread depth if you are going to fool around with the digital ones.) This gauge makes a simple task even simpler. Take multiple readings in less than a second.... no need to zero our the display after each reading as with the digital ones. The reading is clear on this gauge and the depths are color coded so if you are in a rush you don't even need to really read the thing. Finally it's nice to pick up a tool and not worry you may find that the damn battery is dead.

Es una guía práctica para revisar el estado de las canaletas de las llantas. Su funda lo protege bien contra rayaduras.
