Cute. Doesn't actually record. You press record. It looks like it's recording.90% of the time it's not actually recording. The person who designed the interface should be imprisoned for a very long time.Useless.Why bother to have a recorder which, upon hitting 'record,' looks like it's recording, but it doesn't actually record.Terrible UI. What a surprise. It's TASCAM, after all.

TASCAM is a brand I'm familiar with and have heard of, even if I haven't directly had any items from them. This voice recorder being the first product I have owned from this brand, but being an artist myself, I definitely wanted to try this out for recording purposes. The recording quality is great out of the box and sounds good. It picks up audio fairly well and does a good job at equalizing it as well as controlling the sound DB levels to prevent distortion. It takes two AA batteries to power up and to use. I can't speak on the battery life as of yet, but I guess it isn't the end of the world for having to use them. The build seems to be made of plastic, I don't think there is any metal in it, though I would've preferred that. It does have a memory card slot for a micro SD. It does have a speaker on the back of the recorder, to playback any recordings without needing headphones. You can also connect any external mics.It doesn't come with anything else besides the recorder. No USB-C cables, batteries, memory card, case or anything else. You will have to purchase any accessories on your own. The price point for it is decent, given e the ability of this recorder and it does have 32 floating bit - which helps cut out distortion. I would recommend.

I have other portable recorders, including a couple that cost substantially more than the DR-05XP. One of them is substantially older, however, so while the mics are marginally better, it can't match the resolution of this new TASCAM.If I had one complaint, it would be that it does NOT have an internal rechargeable battery. This is 2x AA only if you want to go on battery power. However, it works great with NiMH rechargeable AAs and you can power it via USB as well, so it's really a minor quibble.Other than that, wow! Lots of features with easy to navigate menus, and all-around it'spretty intuitive. How many features? Let's just say that it takes the online manual (hard copy not included with recorder) 100+ pages to go through everything in detail. The omnidirectional mic configuration is much appreciated, and there's an external mic in jack if you have a need to use something besides the omnis. While I haven't used it extensively yet, my preliminary tests are all thumbs up. This makes really great sounding field recordings. The USB interface is plug 'n' play, and the 64 GB PNY MicroSD card I tried works flawlessly as well. Which gives me about 49 hours of 32 bit 44.1k stereo recording. Noice!!!I got this to just throw in my glove box so I always have a recorder available if I need one when I'm out and about. I may even reach for it instead of a more expensive one under certain conditions. Recommended!

Tascam tends to make the best portable recorders in the business, in my opinion, and the 05X is no exception! This device has many great features, and the price is right. If you record your content for streaming, and especially if you're a musician or a vocalist, I very much recommend the O5. This is one of the newer versions with the upgraded USB port and the ability to handle higher frequencies at volume, something I'm not sure any other portable recorder can handle. If you're laying down recording and you want to add more content on top of it later, this device will let you do that as well, and, again, I'm not familiar with any other portable device that can do that! This is a device with most all the current bells and whistles that should last through entire careers, an excellent choice with a quite reasonable price. I have to say, I'm impressed.

If you're looking for a small stereo field recorder, definitely check this one out. The first thing that caught my eye was 32bit float. If you're not familiar with it, you should be. Think of it as an almost failsafe way to record without distortion from sudden loud sounds (like yelling), and the ability to increase low volume recordings that may otherwise have been lost. But the feature set on this little device goes much, much deeper, from EQ, External Mic port, Effects (including reverb), line out, USB-C in/out, track markers, overdubbing and on and on. I'm using rechargeable AA Batteries (not included), and they work great.I love the ability to swap SD cards, and of course you don't need to remove the card to transfer audio. Connecting to my Macbook pro was straightforward with a USB-C to USB-C cable between the two and selecting the proper option in the settings menu.Clearly at under $120 at the time of this review, Tascam is targeting this to virtually every budget minded person who wants a quality pocket recorder, with a small premium on the brand name. The downsides are lack of accessories and questionable build quality. Not even a USB-C cable is included, no windscreen, batteries, SD Card, case...zip, nada. nothing except a warranty card and basic warnings sheet with a QR code to download the owners manual. I'm really okay with that, but I did order a dead cat muff for it. You'll want that if doing anything outdoors and they can be found here on Amazon and in the Tascam Amazon store. I'm still looking for a small case to protect this if dropped as the unit itself is entirely made of plastic, and lacks a sense of heft when in the hand. I would rather have had it made of metal, but that's clearly not the direction Tascam is going these days. Frankly, I like the older Zoom recorders better. Even so, this is a pretty good value if it holds up, but I cannot speak to longevity at this point.
