This is the most focused controllable in a pedal on the market for tone

I tried a SansAmp in the early 00's for some bass grit and modeling, and couldn't get a decent sound out of it.. Actually it sounded bad. Flash forward 20-ish years, same with this one, even with Geddy Lee's "blessing", i.e. design. The layout of the box is not bad, and you do get, on paper, a lot of flexibility in gain and EQ on the two channels. And the "tight" button is a nice scoop for the dirty channel, which gives it a lot of articulation. But I have serious complaints about the device, namely:- the distortion cannot get a nice warm sound, it's a brash, hard-clipping sound on both channels- the channels - supposed to emulate a high end with grit and a low end with punchy, relatively untouched low end, both had too much gain for finesse, and there appears to be no crossover between them, so there are phase issues, and a lack of low end- lack of a footswitch. I know it's supposed to be more of a preamp - set and forget - but many players will want it switched, and the lack of some of the more interesting features make the YYZ pedal (a stripped down version) a no go for me- the color is butt ugly. Not a big deal, but it's true.I tried to like it but I don't. My opinion, and yours may be different.

I mostly play rock and metal and this is such a fantastic preamp for what I need. Everything from classic rock to death metal works perfectly with this.

After receiving an offer to play bass for a local punk band, I realized I did not have any bass amps or pedals that could be used in a practice or gig situation. I'm not in my 20's anymore and I'm not as fit as I used to be. Therefore, I hate having to carry extra amplifiers and speaker cabs to gigs to different parts of town or different towns so I wanted a DI (Direct Input) pedal/box that just bypasses the amp completely and goes directly into the PA.I had heard a lot of good things about Tech 21 from other bass players so I decided I was going to get their Sansamp DI pedal. As I was reading about it here on Amazon, I noticed they had a Geddy Lee endorsed version of the Sansamp for $100 more in their other recommended products section. Ultimately, my Rush fandom won over my tendency to penny-pinch most of the time so GED-2112 it is.So how does it sound? At first, I wasn't impressed but the DI box came with a pictorial guide of different tones you can get from vintage to current Geddy Lee (of course), John Entwistle and Jack Bruce. I remember adjusting the knobs on my pedal to a tone similar to the prescribed Entwistle tone and THAT was when I really started liking this DI box.I haven't adjusted the knobs to the other recommended tones because once I did the aforementioned tone (which is treble at 9, bass at 9, mid at 3, blend at 10, mid-shift between 170 and 500 Hz, 'tight' button engaged and drive at 9), I felt this was it; I don't need any other bass tone. It should be mentioned that my bass is a Schecter Stiletto with EMG active hardware which will make the tone sound much beefier than if you didn't have active pickups/hardware. In short, results may vary depending on your bass. The biggest thing I like about this DI box is that turning the drive up, the tone has a nice touch of overdrive but not to the point where it has that "fart" tone. Even with the drive all the way up, the dynamics of my playing don't require me to adjust knobs for a softer tone; rather, I just play softer.Overall, I like this DI box a lot and while $300+ for it may seem pricey, it is definitely worth it in my book.5/5 stars.
