I liked the forward flow of the narrative. Details were included only when necessary for understanding. I found Aline to be an amazing character. The combination of beauty and intelligence was irresistible. Great story!

Not your typical spy story. However, a story about training for WW2 work as a spy and then more of a memoir Of her her life in WW2 Spain as a coder and information gatherer about Germans hiding their money and stolen art and efforts to trace that. If the reader can forgone the typical emphasis on the " blood and violence aspect" they will find this to be an engaging story. It's a fascinating story of what goes into information gathering with a good helping of romance. There is a happy ending. This book would make a great movie.

Having read all of Aline Griffith's books years ago -- including "The Story of Pascualete" (published in the U.S. as "An American in Spain"), I was captivated by this behind-the-scenes look at her life and her books' characters and events. Well-written, drawing me along smoothly...I hated for it to end. The research and inclusion of hotel receipts, cables, and content of intel reports added dimension to the narrative that had not previously been available. The one negative was the number of footnotes throughout the text, which I found to be disruptive on occasion...I felt that many could have been moved to the Notes section at the end. A thoroughly satisfying read and I recommend to anyone with an interest in the origins of the CIA, high society in general and the lives of American emigres.
