Bought a Japan market used Denon stereo amplifier from 80s for very cheap, and this step down transformer works perfectly well for me. May buy more if I find more good deals from Japan market.

First, there is nothing wrong with this product that I needed to knock off a star for, except for the fact that you would need a 3 to 2 prong adapter to actually plug it in if you took it to Japan, and It is not included. I gave it a 4 star review to draw attention to the review a little. I, personally, always look at the 4 star reviews first. Apologies to LiteFuze. You have to think about your needs. You wouldn’t want to travel with this unless absolutely necessary. Even the 500W version is bulky and weighs over 6 pounds. Check any electrical items you are bringing and you will find many today with 100v to 220v power supplies for international use. So, maybe if you absolutely need to bring your US desktop computer to Japan for work or something, you would have a need for this. Or, if you bought a Japanese kitchen appliance that you really loved and wanted to bring it home. It does both step up voltage to US and step down voltage for Japan. The build quality is great and the price is quite fair. Just make sure you need it.

If you are an electronics geek ... ahem .. fan, like I am, you have undoubtedly discovered that there is a lot of cool audio gear that was made specifically for the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) and not intended for export. Telltale signs are: 100V AC requirement, for vintage radios FM is limited to 76-90 MHz, some of the gear even has cool Japanese writing on it, although most of them have the front panel functions in English. So, here comes the limitation: 100V equipment, even ones that are fine with 60Hz frequency, cannot be used directly in the USA where most locations use approx. 125V / 60 HZ AC power. The difference in US domestic voltage with the needs of 100V equipment is simply too large; risks such as safety, longevity and proper function must all be considered. In comes this step down transformer that allows the 125V to be safely converted to 100V for proper use of the JDM equipment in the USA. This particular unit can also be switched to become a step up transformer in case one wants to use US designated equipment in Japan. My need is strictly for the step down function. The first thing you will notice about this transformer is its build quality; it is a thing of beauty: looks good and is solidly built. It is easy to use and has a generous power limit for audio equipment (I have the 500W model). The unit runs quietly (no annoying hum or anything like that), it runs cool, and most importantly, it allows the JDM equipment to function safely and properly. I used this transformer to power a large Sony boombox (model CFS-V8) and it worked fine; I did not notice any weird artifacts from the transformer. I'm on the hunt for a cool vintage JDM audio amplifier; the generous 500W capability of this unit will be more than sufficient to power the amp and have room to spare. So, if you have need for a step up or down transformer to go between 125V and 100V AC, this transformer will work safely and reliably. While there may be smaller sized units out there, for safety and piece of mind, I would recommend a more robust unit like this one that has the build quality for peace of mind. This unit is all black metal construction and can easily blend into the background to be unnoticed. Select the power capacity based on your anticipated needs. I have the 500W unit that provides plenty of power for home audio equipment. Simply works and recommended. A++++++++Update: I have recently acquired a Sony TA-F333ESX integrated amplifier from Japan and this step down transformer performs flawlessly, allowing me to safely use this cool vintage JDM amp in the USA. Way cool. This transformer continues to be highly recommended. A++++++++

I just got back from a trip to Japan and I am so jealous of all the neat electronics they have that the US market doesn't! But unfortunately, Japanese domestic electronics run on 100 V power instead of the 120 V common in the US, meaning that appliances without their own transformer and power supply will run on overdrive, meaning that common kitchen appliances will break at best and catch fire at worst. So, I saw this and immediately impulse ordered it. It's really sturdily built, and it's heavy - just what you want for these transformers. It also goes both ways - converting 100 V to 120 V and vice versa - but I can only vouch for the 120 to 100 conversion. I tested this with a sake warmer that only needs 250 W, and it worked great! It's not super small, but no transformer on the market is, so you'll need to account for that in your kitchen or whatever space you need. It's not completely silent - I think there's a cooling fan - but it doesn't have the high pitched electrical whine I've heard with other converters. Ultimately, I highly recommend this unit and would be willing to buy a 2000 or 3000 W unit if I had an appliance that needed it.
