It’s nice but a little bit heavy on the head, otherwise it’s really good

I'm a woodworker, and I mostly use a respirator to filter out sawdust. I used a 3m half-mask respirator, but I've been thinking of getting a PAPR for years. Now that I've grown a full beard, I decided to spring for the PAPR.PROS: Very comfortable around my face. Fits around my glasses comfortably, and the constant airflow prevents my glasses from fogging and is very pleasant. Also, I like that I don't have to fuss about with making a good seal against my face.CONS: It's pretty heavy, and every time I move my head the extra weight is annoying. It's only held in place by a head band, and I needed to clamp that pretty tight to keep the helmet from shifting. The tight head band started to give me a head ache. The fan is also louder than I expected. I can't wear my muff style hearing protection, and my ear buds didn't provide as much noise reduction. The filters say "98%", but that isn't a certified rating - I don't know what it means. I don't know how that compares to P100 filters. Also, there's no option to add activated charcoal filters if I want to use it with anything toxic, like oil based paints.I'm thinking that I should have spent more money to get a PAPR with a belt mounted battery and fan, that used standard filters. I could just shave and use my regular respirator, but the PAPR is nice in that it doesn't fog up or interfere with my glasses. It is much more comfortable around my face.EDIT: After using it for a bit, the fan noise doesn't bother me if I listen to music with hearing protection bluetooth earbuds. If anyone wants to talk to me, I have no chance of hearing them unless I take off the PAPR.The filters say they are 98% effective and filter up to 0.6 (or 0.3 microns, the descriptions disagree) microns, and replacements cost $62 a pair. 3M P100 filters are 99.97% effective down to 0.3 microns, have NIOSH certification, and cost $23 for three pairs, or 1/8th the price. I figure that these need to move a lot of air for the positive pressure system to work, but still! I kept a supply of replacement filters on hand for my regular respirators, but at $62 a pop I'm going to wait to see how long the filter lasts and how much I use the PAPR. Shaving is beginning to seem very cost effective. On the other hand, the cool air flow around my face and glasses is really nice. As long as I don't tilt my head or need to hear anything, this PAPR is a winner.

I have used this in my workshop for a week now and the Airshield and Faceshield Dust Protector works as advertised. I really like this unit and I would have given 5 Stars if the Ear Protectors for the unit had not been discontinued by the manufacturer. I did not find this out until after I purchased the Airshield. Also there is no indication of the state of the battery when charging, as the red light on the charger stays on all the time the unit is plugged in, regardless of the charge state of the battery. The charging unit should have been a smart charger that would report the state of the battery when fully charged. Not knowing this could result in overcharging the battery and shorting its life or still worst damage the battery.

Even though the unit is a little top heavy ( don't spend a lot of time looking at the floor) I find it works perfectly. Light enough so I don't notice I'm wearing it when I'm busy, and quiet enough too. Cool, clean air keeps the shield clear and the battery is lasting longer than I expected, given other comments I have seen. I've done a fair bit of work over four days and no need to recharge yet. I originally though of buying one of those 3M two part units but found them just too expensive. Glad I chose this one.

So I have owned this for almost a year and thought I'd add some more to the review. This product makes you a better woodworker. Knowing your lungs and eyes are safe I find I am more inclined to go out and knock around the shop for a few hours in the evening. I also find that since I know I can breathe and won't injure my eyes I can focus more closely on the task at hand. Without this I'm always kind of paying as much attention to the saw dust and potential for crap in my eyes then the direction of cut, or keeping the wood up against the fence. It does get heavy at times (3 to 4 hours of use), but I've learned to get it on and off easily, so its not an issue. I've used it for days and days between charges. Yup, this was a Great purchase!I am blind in my right eye and have had lung issues for years. I want to see my eye Dr. and he asked me "do you do any woodworking, to which I said, yea, all the time". He asked me if I wore safety glasses and I said, no, thats why I have my prescription glasses made out of plastic, isn't that good enough? He then told me how many people he treats every year for splinters or metal shavings in their eyes. He said, I'm not letting you out of here till you promise me you will buy a full face shield and USE it! Well I decided he was right, so I told my wife to buy me this for Christmas. Some of the reviews that talk about it feeling heavy on your head are fair, but you get use to it. What is really, really nice is the feeling you get when you know your breathing air that has been through a really good filter. The powered venting function of the hood is simply fantastic. No fogging, positive air flow so you aren't pulling the air through a respirator or mask, good comfortable product your not afraid to use. The only issue i have is for a quick cut and run project, I'm not up for grabbing it and putting it on. Thats a habit I need to break. In summary, great product, great purchase, priceless protection.UPDATE, UPDATE, UPDATE: I have lowered my review on this product from a 5 to 2 stars because the headband has broken after 2 years of use. I've used the system several dozen times and while it has done a great job of filtering the air, to be charged $45 to replace a defective design in a headband is crazy. This product has a major weakness/flaw and I'm discouraged I can't find anyway to remedy the situation. For $400 (tax and shipping) this is inexcusable.UPDATE to the Update. Well based on reading other reviews, I contacted the US distributor. He immediately returned my email with an immediate offer to replace the headband at no charge. The re-designed head band arrived about a week later and it has clearly been improved. With this outstanding customer service I'm restoring my review to 5 stars.
