2000 ford focus prefect fit, didn't have to cut or anything. When you remove the plastic cover, feel with your finger at the corners of the filter housing on the outside facing you, you will feel some type of clicking the plastic together. They are on the left and right side of the housing at the corners. It's a band of plastic that allows the filter housing the expand about 1/2" towards you to accept the filter. Now you know it's there, I'm sure you'll figure it out. STOP CUTTING THE FILTER

The filter fit perfectly into my 2002 Focus sedan’s filter slot. Please note that, when you plan to add or change your filter, you may need to bring a Phillips head screwdriver and a vacuum cleaner. Why? Because on some Focus models (such as mine), in order to remove the panel hiding the filter, you must:a.) turn your car on, then (on a CLEAN windshield preferably sprayed with water or with water just dripped on it from a soaked towel) RUN your wipers—turning your car OFF when the wipers sweep to the top, holding them out of the wayb.) Look for a little plastic “plug” the driver’s side (left side) wiper arm hid, then pry it up with a thin blade—a simple steak knife tip will do.c.) Lastly, to allow you more flexibility in moving the trim piece, unscrew to little screw the “plug” hid. Taking off the entire piece can be a hassle, as it *also* has a plastic part inserted into the other side’s panel, and this is kind of difficult to get to.d.) Very—VERY—gently lift up the trim piece to either bend it up enough to insert the filter,NOTE: when you lift up or remove your trim panel, you’ll probably notice a mass of leaves, tiny twigs, and other detritus clogging the whole area up. That’s what the vacuum cleaner is for! What’s the sense in putting in a filter if it’s surrounded by dead and decaying matter?Anyway, in my case, this piece fit absolutely perfectly, and replaced a previous filter I’d installed years ago—which was totally covered in dirt, leaves, road salt residue, and dead bugs.
