Overall a pretty decent kit. It would make a great gift or would good to toss in the car/truck.The actual ferro rod is good - it's a decent size and definitely throws sparks. That being said, the included scraper/striker is really just so-so, it definitely works, but I was able to get a stronger spark shower when using that back of a knife. It's not a big deal, but worth noting.It does also include a magnesium rod. Magnesium won't spark, but you can shave it into a pile to aid in ignition as magnesium burns very, very hot. I've never really considered using a magnesium rod, but it's an interesting addition and it could certainly have it's place.The included fire starters seem fine, they appear to be pine with a "fuzzy" exterior and a denser core. That being said, even though they are serviceable, I'll probably replace them with petroleum jelly or wax saturated cotton balls.Overall a decent kit though. You will absolutely be able to get a fire going with the ferro rod alone, but the extras and the case make it ideal as a car kit or nice little gift.

I was excited to give this flint and steel set a try. I clearly need someone to show me how to use these because I could never get my starter to catch. I followed the directions and even got it to spark a couple of times but after 20 minutes my hands were tired and I gave up. The set was packaged in a nice tin with all you need to get a fire going. It has a nice presentation but it fell flat when I could not get a fire started. I gave it four stars because I have assumed it was user error.

I added this to the jump bag I have for those moments that may need a fire due to a lack of a lighter or very wet times. Living in a hurricane area, I have had times when the power was off and I needed a small fire pit in the backyard to cook and stay warm with until power was restored and this is perfect as a backup should my lighter become wet again. Perfect little device and easy to use, store and keep in both the vehicle and house.
