The go on top of your factory installed car rails, and you need them for the Yakama kayak racks to sit on. Those are pricy too. I didn't know that and thought that I could use my existing rails. It takes patience AND the ability to follow the written instructions. Is it worth it? Yes. I can now get my kayak on top of my car without assistance. Okay, at 5'4" I still have to have a folding step to give me the leverage, but that is a minor inconvenience. If you get the Yakama kayak system you will need two sets of these locks.https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000AT0SE?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Love this roof rail set up. Haven’t noticed any wind noise, and so far no noticeable difference in mpg. I got this for a Mercedes GL 320 and ordered the recommended size from the Yakima site. These stick out way past the body, so if that bothers you, be prepared to cut them or go with a Thule setup (which is more flush with the body from the start). I don’t mind as I mounted a mega warrior cargo carrier on mine and the extra length allows me to mount a few extra accessories on the sides.

I hear no wind noise at all, which is great. Took me a lot longer than anticipated to install, but once on, it’s not going anywhere, and taking it off will be much quicker. Overall very happy. One star off, because of price, and more importantly the fact you have to buy locks separately, and you will need them.Pro’s:No noticeable wind noise.Very sturdy, well made.Looks very good on vehicle.Cons:Way harder to install than videos and instructions make it seem.Have to buy locks separately.2 year update:Still looks like new. Kept on SUV through winters. Very sturdy and durable. Would definitely buy again.

My wife and I were thinking of buying a couple of kayaks. A local shop rents theirs and if you purchase within a month they take the rental price off the purchase. So we decided to rent but we discovered that my stock crossbars would not carry the kayaks. They tried to sell me these but I decided to hold off and see what I could find online. These were over $100 cheaper. I purchased the locks for them as well to prevent theft. I couldn't be more pleased with these. We did end up purchasing two kayaks and now we head off to the lake at least twice a week. I haven't had a single problem with these and they are easy to install. I installed them by myself in about 20 minutes.I don't notice any additional wind noise when driving around with nothing on them and they make my Jeep look even more rugged. I would suggest these to anyone who asks, as a matter of fact my neighbor came over just to ask me about these and where he could purchase a set.

Used these bars to span the sided rails of a Nissan Pathfinder (factory rails were more expensive and supported less weight). Easy to install and allowed us to mount a Yakima space case on the roof. 5000 miles, 10 national parks, and they still look like new. I originally planned to remove them and reinstall them only when needed, but the look and finish is good enough I am not sure I will bother removing them before our next adventure.
