I had a lot of fun playing with this. Like most photographers, I followed a long evolution of cameras, off camera flash, modifiers the whole history of new products and settling into what I like and feel comfortable with, so when I set this up in my home studio, I could not control this light. I was getting a lot of hotspots on my backdrop, but I do have a limited space to work. My subject looked great because I was getting this beautiful wrap around light. This thing popped up very easily and a 2 foot modifier is a great size light source and this makes it very portable as well. This company is really trying to be a competitor and the quality is there so keep an eye out for this brand. I’m very impressed. That being said I found the best use for this. One thing that I outgrew earlier in my journey was I used to use umbrellas in outdoor portraits in open shade, and I stopped doing that because umbrellas turn into a giant wind sail and then you start introducing sandbags and wagons, but this product solves that problem because it gives you the very natural looking wrap around fill light, so this has now become my open shade on location portrait light modifier as long as I don’t need something bigger. If there’s any limitations to this, it’s the same limitations with a shoot through umbrella so if you have that experience you can use this with ease. You just have less control over the light than a softbox you can point and grid. Recommend.

Everything about this diffuser is top quality; the ribs feel strong, it's easy enough to open and close, materials are tough while still being lightweight and it comes with an excellent carrying case. Setup is very easy, considering it's all one piece and works similarly to an umbrella. I'm using it with a generic video light and the diffused light pattern can create some moody and unique shots; it works quite a bit better than the tiny diffuser I had before. I don't have a whole lot to compare it to, but I'm very happy with it and there isn't really anything I'd change about it. It fits perfectly into the included carrying case which offers some protection but isn't crushproof. So far it's done a good job of protecting it and it's way nicer than the usual generic drawstring bags. For how well made it is and the overall excellent level of quality, I think it's a pretty solid value and would definitely recommend this over cheaper, generic brands.

I have to admit, I have been subconsciously ignoring all the talk about lantern-style softboxes over the last several years. But when I saw this very affordable model from Amaran, a company that has proven itself to be a reliable source, I had to give the Lantern 65 a try. If you don’t care to read the rest of this review, here’s the bottom line: I’m glad I tried it. In fact, I love it.But let’s look at a few reasons why I like it, and why you too might like it. Perhaps not the most important reason, but a darn good one: the Lantern 65 is by far the easiest and quickest to set up and take down of any good-sized light modifier I’ve ever laid my hands on. I say good-sized, as I’m obviously not including the kind of thing you pop on the end of a speedlight and direct or scatter light. Pull this puppy out of the bag it comes in, stand the top of it on the ground, push down on the Bowens ring and a couple of internal assemblies hook together easier than I can describe it. Step back and be amazed; the lantern is ready to mount to your Bowens-mount light of choice.I’ve been trying the Lantern 65 with a variety of LED instruments, ranging from 40W to 200W as well as a handful of Godox strobes. Every time I fire one of them up I feel like I’ve found a new favorite combination. Not only is this a super easy tool to set up, but it turns out to be a very easy light modifier to use. Starting out with LEDs gave me a great education on how the light will disperse and how it will behave as a key or fill for portraiture or for podcasting, two-person video interviews, etc. That done, I can feel comfortable using it with my strobes to get some beautiful, creative results with portraiture, food photography, etc. While this is a very inexpensive light modifier, the light quality is excellent. But so is the quality of the product, itself. It is quite lightweight, a bonus for putting on a boom arm, but seems to be constructed quite well for repeated use, including opening and closing.I may be late to the party when it comes to “discovering” the fun, ease and creative opportunities of using a lantern-style light modifier, but I’m all in, now. The Lantern 65 has done much to reinforce my belief that Amaran understands the needs and desires of pros and prosumers alike and is doing an exceptional job of meeting them. They’re certainly doing so with this 5-star product.

The Amaran Lantern 65 is the “set it and forget it” soft light every video shooter dreams of: simple, fast, and flattering. Its 360º glow wraps your subject in soft, even light that feels natural, especially for interviews or ambient mood setups. The quick-build press mount is a joy to use, no wrestling with rods. And because it uses a universal Bowens mount, it slides right onto most lights without a fuss.Pros:Beautiful, omnidirectional soft light = instant atmosphereQuick setup design = more time shootingLightweight and portable = built for travel gigs or small studiosCons:Spherical design means less directional control; bounce or flag as neededSlightly bulky when packed, even collapsedIf you’re doing interviews, podcasts, or want that soft “just right” light without hard shadows, this is a total go-to.

Fit first time and haven't taken it off. Was getting harsh lights and research pointed me to something like this. Softened up my lighting a ton. Makes it look very professional as well.
