I purchased this item because I wanted a basic 6V/12V battery charger to replace my old charger which had died. I have a sophisticated "smart" battery charger which has given excellent service; however with very weak batteries it will sometimes go into "error" mode and not even attempt to recharge a battery. The charger being reviewed contains no microprocessor - it simply applies voltage to the battery terminals. It never fails to try to charge a battery, no matter what the battery's condition is. Since I deal with batteries on tractors and the like, I need a charger with this capability. I use it to bring a discharged battery back to life and then switch the battery to my "smart" charger to rehabilitate the battery. With "smart" chargers being all the rage, well-built "dumb" chargers like this are getting hard to come by. This is a quality product which meets my needs at a reasonable price.

I bought it for my Dad but he said it’s helped but that the batteries do ran out, it doesn’t last as long before having to recharge it again.

This charger does what most of them on the market will not do! It revives a completely flat battery. Modern 'smart' chargers must detect voltage in order to trip the built-in microprocessor. The Attwood 11901-4 has no such 'smart' circuitry, making it far more useful while still having protection from overcharging. My car sat unused until the battery had zero charge, zero voltage, This charger, at only 6 amps, had the car started and running after only 6 or 7 hours ... in my book, that is OUTSTANDING! buy this, it does the job.(It ain't magical, but it's close!)
