For someone who would say they are not a reader, I love this book! I studied Art at A-level and I don’t remember any female artists, maybe I would have found it more interesting if they had intentionally been included. Not only does Katy Hessel explain the societal context but there are so many female artists whose stories are riveting. I can’t put the book down and it had pictures of the art! Other history is Art books I’ve read wrote about lots of artists or particular pieces but then don’t include the picture for you to think for yourself. I’m tempted to buy this book again in hard back just to have the pages bigger.This is such an amazing resource, thankyou Katy. I teach art and I also use this book to make sure that my students introduction to art history isn’t male dominated as clearly, having read this book, despite women having many obstacles in their way to become artists, many have been forgotten or written out of history.

Yo estudié bellas artes en la universidad, pero en mis clases de historia del arte comenzábamos a ver mujeres ya en el siglo XX, este libro te permite ampliar la mirada sobre todo en la historia previa a este siglo. La historiadora es muy buena y hacer una excelente complicación. Sería interesante ver si más adelante realiza varios tomos, tipo enciclopedia.

I'm a massive fan of Katie Hessel, and I listen to her podcast Great Women Artists. This book is a deep dive into the untold history of art, bringing to the fore the myriad women artists who were excluded from the establishment, and acknowledging their impact on the art world.The only negative is how brief each segment is. Of course, to give each artist longer would require a multi book series - not a bad idea!

Quite a comprehensive survey (which can be compared to the original "The Story of Art")
