My 17' Perception sea kayak's rudder fractured where the metal post that slides into the kayak is joined to the rudder. I had called my local outdoor store but they wanted 400$ for a rudder kit. I took a chance on this one and it worked pretty well. I really only needed the rudder and cord, but it came with other parts for for pedal wiring as well. I replaced my rudder in under an hour. I was able to replace the old rope that pulls the rudder up and down with the new rope included (old rope is thicker than the new one and holes in the new rudder were too small for the old rope)- one of the holes where the pull cord was supposed to pass was only partially open- I had to use a knife to make it smoother. The metal post at the base of the rudder fit into my kayak, however it was 1" too short and there is no cotter pin included. I got around the length issue by creating a rope stopper- this worked fine. My only concern is that it will rust outdoors as it looks to be painted steel, otherwise I am pleased with the new rudder.

I installed on a hoodoo tempest 14’ kayak to replace the fairly mediocre factory rudder. Installation wasn’t too difficult and the components are good construction. Plenty of cable was included and I appreciate that I can raise the rudder from my seat when getting shallow or floating through lots of vegetation. Seems to be same as or similar to name brand rudder kits. I’ve used it maybe a dozen times so far without issue, and would buy again.

Would like to give no stars but it is getting 1 because I can return it at least. Not as advertised. Product picture shows rudder with mounting hardware, cables and rope to deploy rudder. None of this included. Rudder only. Don't waste your money

Got mine in, and was flummoxed to find out that there was no return spring in the package! Searched Amazon, and elsewhere online, for a compatible spring, no luck. Asked the seller, and got a reply that you need foot pedals to operate the rudder. Hmm... knew that. What I wanted to know was, for my $60, where the spring was. Looked carefully at the pictures, and found that it appeared that the whole deploy/retract feature is manually operated using two cords, one to pull it up, and one to pull it down. The design of the rudder seems to support this. Who buys a kayak rudder that needs to be manually pulled up and down?! What happens when the rudder hits an underwater object, and it's tied in the down position? The description does not state anywhere that the rudder is manually deployed/retracted, and only careful examination under magnification of the one picture seems to reveal that fact. I am returning this item, and have ordered this "made in the USA" rudder instead: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008ALX8KA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=106-01-22: TAF keeps replying that you need foot pedals to turn the rudder, but it needs the spring (or a bungee) in order to retract into the stored position. Your rudder appears to use two cords to raise and lower it. In the event that the rudder hits an underwater object, the fact that it's tied down to keep it in the water may result in damage to the rudder and possibly to the kayak.I don't know who designed this rudder, but they may not be intimately familiar with kayaking or canoeing. The spring/bungee has nothing to do with turning the rudder as you described. I'm sorry, but it's a very poor design for modern kayakers.
