This works really well. It's substantially larger than other comparably-priced ferro rods on Amazon. This makes it easier to hold and use, and ensure it will last longer. It's winning feature though, is it's shape. It is a hexagon/or octagon shape (can't remember how many sides). You're not just striking a cylinder, you're striking a nice, flat, wide edge. This helps you strike a larger surface area at once, producing more sparks. I started a fire after a big rainstorm (see picture), with very little effort. This thing produced enough sparks to get my kindling going. The striker works great, and the rod and striker are connected with a generously long piece of leather cordage. A small, velvet-like pouch completes the package. Honestly, this is outstanding.

Bought this for our 12 year old boy.... and his dad. They work well and our boy is happy with it. That is what we wanted.

The finish and material seems to shiny and does not provide as much sparks than regular brands and smaller rods.... not very impressed
